It's basically saying if something needs mended/fixed take the time and do it now, otherwise it will take alot more time and effort to fix later.

So in old timey language I suppose if your mittens had a small hole in them, take some time and put a stitch in it to fix it rather than do noting and have a huge hole and need 9 stitches to fix it.

I think I should get promoted to Master Seargent of the Shads for being able to answer that. ?!

As a medical person, may I add the detail that you should lie on the side you have been shot in, otherwise both lungs will fill with blood regardless! Hope this is of use to everyone!
