I think I'm being gouged on postage

Post by the enemy muton »

Won two :shadow: tonight off the same seller; really good price at £5.60 each, but the seller wants £5.08 postage which I can't help but feel is a bit high - even if they are sent 1st class recorded it shouldn't cost more than £2.50 (in my experience). What do you think I should do? I want the figures but now they don't look like such a bargain, and I'm just getting sick of being gouged on p&p. I suppose it's the principal more than aything :-x .

A typical figure from the US to Aussie costs between $2.50 to $4. So 5 pounds for local, unsigned, is steep. If he had that price listed when you bid I'd take it, but maybe tell him you thought it was a bit high. I wouldn't leave negative for postage unless he hadn't listed the price on the auction.

I got Steve to nab me a Stalker cheap as postage was ridiculous, even in the UK. Same seller I'm betting.

I'd say they're gouging you.

Was this two items won separately that you are getting sent combined shipping?

If so it's worth asking them if they might have made a mistake on the combined invoice, only how you went on the royal mail calculator while you were waiting and on there it comes to £x, so even with materials and time added it should come to no more than £y. A bit more tactful than sending an outright "your robbing me blind" accusation, gives them room to manoeuver and neatly drops the hint that they are going to get a poor rating if they stick with the inflated cost or fail to justify it.

I've done that recently with a US seller who incredibly at first tried to charge more for combined postage than the quoted cost of sending the items separately. I think he might have been miffed that I'd bagged a devilfish and night attack for $6 total.

Good point, Monky. I always check postage before I bid and add that to the cost. If its too high then I let it go. I have noted that the ebayers with higher postage tend to not sell their gear too quick and sometimes not at all.

Buyer beware.

I don't think that is too high. What is that $8 US? I charge $8 for one fig then $1 per fig thereafter for anything international. I never ship in a mailer though, only a sturdy box. First class usually runs $5-7 for one fig to ship. It is a pain in the butt to fill out the custom form then wait in line at the post office to ship, not an excuse, just why I charge a little more for my time. You are lucky that sellers still will ship first class, for they have no recourse if your shipment is lost or a buyer decides to screw them with a false claim via paypal. A lot of sellers will only ship priority with tracking, and that will run you at minimum $13 in the small priority box.

Your suggestion of no more than £2.50 for inland UK postage is probably about right, even if they are sent in a suitable ard box. They will no doubt fall in to the most expensive 'packet' category under Royal Mail's system. £5.00 is double and therefore excessive unless they are to be sent in a gold-plated box.

Anyone is always best checking with sellers on how they treat multiple wins for postage otherwise no one can really complain when the invoice is for what it states on the listing. Personally, I always combine postage and send things basically at cost, but that's me.

I would agree you should approach the seller now and check the invoice is correct for combined postage. Good luck and hope you get the price reduced.

. . . And don't forget that while you probably shouldn't leave negative feedback if the shipping cost was mentioned in the description, I would encourage you to properly complete the four star rating, which would allow you to mark the shipping cost without leaving proper negative feedabck.

Did the seller mention the shipping in the auction or not? If yes, then you would have known it from the start. If not, then you've got a case. Plus for next time, always ask indication for shipping before bidding.

Yeah, the price per figure was £2.99 postage, which is reasonable enough if it is being sent 1st class recorded which is what I do. However, if someone bought one or two extra figures off me I would not charge any extra for postage as I feel it does not add much more to the price of postage. To charge an extra £2.10 for one more figure is what I feel a bit hard done by. Normally I would have emailed first for a combined price, but the auctions only had literally 90 seconds left when I saw them and decided to bid so never really had a chance.

True, true, I just get annoyed now with sellers who jack up the postage when they obviously get less for the items than they were wanting. I mean, if I'd won 4 Shads for that price would he have then charged me a tenner for postage?
