My Nana was a mechanic in the RAF during the war (fixing Lanc's apparently), so I think that song is pretty cool.

,when my father was in hospital about a month ago,I got talking the old chap in the opposite bed, turns out he'd been a Lanc' pilot in the war, & had spent 7 years in the R.A.F.
I bet your Nana could told you some good stories about her time in th R.AF. eh?
I live not far from an old airbase thats run by a couple of brothers, they have a Lanc' called "Just Jane" that's still taxiable, You can practically stand under her wing tips when they start her up, the sound of 4 Merlins is some of the best music I've ever heard in my life, the sound just vibrates straight though you.

Amen Bill. There's a CAC P-51d Mustang at an airfield near here, it flys over ever now and then. When it does I run out the back yard just to perv. Twice the pilot has done aerobatics over the bay, I'm near the beach and got an incredible view. Nothing like a Merlin in a dive. They scream.

Nana is pretty quiet at her time as a WAAF. Granddad was in the RNZAF stationed up in Scotland and he met her in London. She was working thru the blitz. One story she had was of half a Spitfire coming thru the roof while she was working on a Lanc. I'd suspect that was at the earlier half of the BOB when the airfields were being targeted. Apparently they were evacuated to a nearby house while the dog fighing was going on. Incredible stuff. Tough as nails my Nana. 87 and still going, no medication, nothing.

Granddad was a Flt Sgt on Ansons. From what I can tell he would have been doing patrols over the North Atlantic looking for U boats. Apparently the Kiwi's got rep for being a little crazy, throwing grenades out the windows etc.

Have a quick Google for "G for George", Bill. Its a Lancaster at the Australian War Museum in Canberra. its not flying but was restored. Bloody awesome. Also check out the New Zealand fighter pilots museum, near my folks in Wanaka. They have all airworthy aircraft including a Hurricane, Mustang and currently restoring a DH Vampire. I also get along to the Moorabbin air museum occasionally too.

Righto, I'm going to put the Battle of Britain on just to hear the merlins.
