Memories as a kid

Post by Dave Tree »

Was thinking yesterday about the stuff I had as a kid and the memories of playing with mates and also my old dog chewing my figures.
After some thought, I can pretty much remember everything I had and where/ when I got them, does anyone else?

Here's a breakdown of what I had as a kid:

Series 1
SAS - my first figure - Zodiac Toys in Salisbury
Commando - Christmas present
Mission Pilot - chewed to death by dog
Arctic Assault - form John menzies in Bournemouth
2 -Para - the free figure I got from Buy 3 Get 1 Free
SAS Frogman - Christmas present
Commander - mailaway
US Paratrooper - Christmas present
HQ - Christmas present

Series 2
Z-Force Sapper - my second figure - Zodiac Toys Salisbury
Z-Force Captain - third figure - Zodiac Toys Salisbury
Z-Force Radio Operator
Z Force Infantryman
SAS Commando - Christmas Present? lost feet to the dog
Lance
Dart
SAS Pilot - Birthday present
SAS Attack Trooper - on holiday in Wales
SAS Panther - Christmas present
MMS - Lewis Meeson Ringwood
SAS Hawk & Blades - Birthday present
Q Force Deep Sea Defender - John Menzies Bournemouth
Q Force Sonar Officer
Q Force Aqua Trooper - Lewis Meeson Ringwood
Sealion - birthday present.
Space Force Security Trooper - John Menzies Bournemouth - rememebr being so happy finding this.
Space Force Pilot - Zodiac Toys Salisbury
Space Force Commander
Space Force Engineer
Red Shadow
Baron Ironblood
Muton - chewed to death by dog
Black Major - I'm sure I got him through a swap?
Kraken - got through mailway offer
Skeletron - got through mailaway offer
Escape Armour - birthday present

Series 3
Gung Ho - Toymaster Salisbury, my first series 3 figure
Duke - Birthday
Ripcord - Birthday
Doc - Birthday
Flash - Birhtday
Stalker - Matchams Market Ringwood - except it was a Jammer and I was really pissed off whe I realised.
Infantryman - mailaway
Hovercraft - Birthday - Toymaster Salisbury
Cobra Commander
Cobra Trooper - Toymaster Salisbury
Stormshadow
Scrap Iron - this was a free mailaway figure, but I can't remember the promotion, does anyone? Was it in the comics? I was so excited at getting him.
Major Bludd
Firefly - Same Christmas as Destro, but opened before him
Destro - Christmas and was the last Palitoy issue figure I had
Zartan & Swamp Skier - I think it was from Matchams Market?
ASP - Christmas
CLAW - Birthday present

Mostly all figures, I'm sure more of these were birthday/ Christmas presents, but was quite surprised at how many I remember getting.

I also remember seeing figures, but never getting them, like Mutt and Junkyard in Salisbury and a lone Baroness in a CO-OP store in Medway Kent with my Grandmother, but never getting it as the bubble had lifted and there were no weapons. By same token, it was with my Grandparents when I discovered the Hasbro re-issue line in Hamleys in London a few years later and they bought me Airtight.

I remember my friend Lee had all the Shadow vehicles, Shadowtrack, Laser Exterminator, Hyena and another friend Joe had loads of figures too.

Does anyone else remember this sort of stuff?

Dave.

yes, i do remember some stuff...

as a kid i had :eagle2: :quick: :barracuda: :stake: :stalker: :skip: :breaker: :tracker: :inf: :wheels: :quarrel: :steeler: and the associated vehicles, as well as the ATC, Dart and Shaft and the Whirlwind.

i know i got the jeeps and the tank for xmas one year. (presumably '83).

i got a FLAK cannon second hand in a toy shop/bicycle shop in Chalford, and also got a second hand :heli: to use it at the same time. :heli: was the only series one figure i had until i got my :arctic: this year. i think that was in about '88.

i never had any series 3 stuff, although i do remember seeing a 'Cobra' Hyena and an AF Skystriker in a shop in town. i also remember seeing the :sas: Wolverine and wanting it, but never got it.

i can remember having the toys but not when, i had so many action force, joes and star wars toys my mum forced me to put them in the loft as it took up to much room. Then when i was 14 i gave them to my younger step brothers who destroyed them. My heart still hurts at that thought.

Memory getting fuzzy in old age, but I can remember mum buying my 1st ever Star Wars figure from a small shop in Great Yarmouth, Farm Boy luke Skywalker, while we were on holiday there..
I'd not yet seen the film but I'd asked for a Luke figure. We went into what seemed like every toy shop in the town before finding one, almost coming home with Han @ one point.
Proud to say I've still got him :-D

Very play-worn as you can see, but for sentimental reasons I'll never part with him, just about all of my childhood Star Wars figures have been replaced by/sold off to buy better condition ones.
The 1st :AFLogo: toy I ever owned was :eagle2: bought him from John Lewis in Peterborough, I think that one stands out in my memory as I just didn't have that many "non-Star Wars" action figures..& my 1st ever Transformer was Bumblebee :-D
More news, as its made, from new Action Force!

Your memory is clearly playing tricks on you dave - it says there the muton was destroyed by your dog??? Never could have happened??? Surely your getting him mixed up with another figure?

What I can remember -

Televiper and ferret. - Buried in sand in Lanzarote. Still there as far as I know.
Snow cat. I think the caterpiller tracks were moulded. I think I recall being miffed by that.
Hydrofoil. - My pride and joy. Spent a lot of time in the bath with this. Didn't float as I recall.
Zandar.
B.A.T. Still my favorite of all the figures.
Scarlett. I think she might have been a mailaway. Can anyone confirm if there was a mailaway Scarlett.
Hooded Cobra Commander. Definitely a mailaway.
Crocmaster but no croc. I borrowed both from a neighbour. Lost the croc and his mum made me buy the figure off him.

A pitiful collection. I should phone my mother now and complain but there was the Hydrofoil.

ooooo and Monkeywrench..just remembered that one now.

I remember desperately wanting to complete the drednok set and not doing it. Working on it now with the 25th Ann line but Buzzer is hard to find.

I remember begging my mum for Quarrel and the RAM bike. We were at Alton Towers for a day out and instead of pleading to go on the Black Hole or the Corkscrew, I moaned about not getting the AF toy I wanted from the gift shop!!
I also had a Sealion with the grey repaint Dolphin which I used to pretend was a time machine. You had to get it to travel at 88 miles an hour and you would be transported back in time to 1955. I've no idea where I got the inspiration from.
Other than that I still have quite a few of my Action Force figures and vehicles from back in the day. The Shadowtrak I was trying to complete the other day is one of them.
It's funny, buy around 2003 when I got into collecting proper I saw a Tripwire figure on eBay and thought it was a rare variant. I sat there bemused thinking hang on, my one was black and had a SAS logo on his chest.... long gone I'm afraid.

I think at the end of this thread we should all call what parents we have left and thank them. I for one was a moaning greedy little sh*t bag and my mum and dad must have spent a fortune on me over the years. Hang on... I've got a 10 month old son....he's going to want toys......action figures....it's going to cost me a bloody fortune!!!! At least I get to nick all their accessories to stick on my AF figures, hee, hee!
