Dave's Command Bunker *cough* Cupboard *cough*

Have mentioned in a couple of threads perviously that Chloe and I have started to work on the spare room to display toy collection.

It is small room, we have decorated it, have a few power points available and plenty of good natural light (which does not show in the photo's)

The constraints, other than size, include that I need to get a desk in there for the desktop PC to work on and ideally a bit of floorspace to roll out the 'roll out bed' for guests.

I collect Star Wars vintage, some modern, Kubricks, Galactic Heroes and then also have small Action Force & Starcom collections, as well as the odd other toyline or so. Chloe collects My Little Pony, She-ra and vinyl toys too, so some space has to be kept free to account for her too.
Ideally we want them behind glass to save the dusting and also my wolverine of a nephew who loves Star Wars.

so the room is a shoebox, and to give some idea of context of scale, I pulled out the carded vintage figures and pretty much took up a 1/3 of the room, so there is no chance of displaying these all, and would have to be 3,4, maybe 5 deep.

The Star Wars stuff will be on rotation as there simply isn't enough space, ie, one month vintage, next month Kubricks etc.

I had my mind set on two oak display cabinets, which were lovely and good solid wood, but really expensive and due to the size limited what could be done and where they could fit in the room. My friend reccomended IKEA Billy cases, which although is a low cost display option, the effect he achieved was brilliant, and compact and allows for a flexible system to display a wide range of items, which is good for us..

Parts can be replaced with glass shelves and glass doors added, so looks like it ticks the boxes.

The nearest IKEA is a zillion miles away, but one is opening 20 odd miles away in a few months, so am planning to get a look look and then also incoporate a desk for the PC near the window. I'll need space for reference books etc, so hopefully those two can be combined.

Has anyone else been given the chance to use a room for the purposes of their collection and then found it's really difficult and not as straight forward as you hoped?
If anyone has any good suggestions, I'm all ears, but will use the thread a s a work in progress, so to speak :)

Dave.

i've had my "Den" for 3 years. i got my cabinets for nothing as the solicitors next to my work were being refurbished and delivered to my house for £20. and still everything barr my shadows is boxed up and scattered throughout the house. the missus has slowly, slowly filled MY room with her sh*t and we now store the kids toys there too. one of my plans this year is to have a real clearout then get the den finished. i still want a few more units/shelve system as i have far too much stuff to display and dont want to rotate every blue moon. everything must be displayed.

I use racking shelves, I actually picked up a couple of sets for nowt through Freecycle. They might tide you over until your Ikea is built?

I think you're being a bit optimistic though, if it were me I'd consider having the PC in a different room.

I also balk at the idea of rotation. Unless it's on a turntable then bugger that.

Therein lies the problem for those of us who do not reside in mansions of collecting carded figures.

provided we're talking army builders, and that there all lined up neatly, the more you can get on a shelf the better

Dave, you'd fit a lot more figures in that room you took 'em out of the packaging..only joking, to (miss?)qoute the Joker "Where does he get those wonderful toys from?"

The IKEA is only a couple of weeks until it opens, so that's not too bad. The desktop has got to fit in there, there's nowt where else to stick it ;)

And as for rotation, yeah, you're right, it will be once in a blue moon, but there just isn't enough room for it all to fit in - doh!!

I'd be more than happy to help you to take 'em out & play with 'em..It's been ages since I've smelt that lovely "new figure" smell of a freshly opened Star Wars figure,it'd be just like christmas circa 1982. Come to think about it they, sould bottle that small as a womens perfume well, I know it'd attract my attention..

Oh yeah, I know what you mean, this is about 8 years ago, but the incident followed opening up a fresh figure from a beaten card....

L.o.L, That reminds me of Adrian Mole's experiment with glue sniffing for some strange reason..That must be the first green headed Prune face variant I've ever seen..
