Role Play/Halloween costumes?

Post by Goofateer »

One of my absolute favorite sub-categories of G.I. Joe collecting is costumes. Pretty much anything a kid can wear. In the US we have a long history of G.I. Joe Halloween costumes, and role playing going all the way back to the 1960's. We've got Halloween costumes from the 1960's Astronaut right through Sgt. Slaughter. There are role play sets that include everything from Destro's :jackal: mask to Dukes :breaker: helmet. Granted, most are pretty rare, but they are dam cool

I know in France there were a few masks released. But did Europe get anything else? How cool would it be if there was a Red Shadow :shadow: Halloween costume? Or a Muton :muton: role play set?

Did any of the US sets get released under the Action Force banner? Did any exclusive product ever show up?

Ok, 20 view, and no replies. I'm thinking the answer is a big fat NO.

I did remember that there was a set of patches for Action Man probably some time in the late 1970's. So at least there is something along these lines. I find it hard to believe that there would be nothing else though.

Aside from Meertoh's homemade Ironblood costume, there isn't. However, there may be Action Man costumes that relate to the first wave.

I'm guessing the Destro outfit is too rare to customise into a Red Jackal suit?

One idea is to visit the army/navy surplus...

I'm dredging up some memories now, but I remember seeing something in a toyshop in the North of Scotland in late '82. There were two dressing up costumes; cheap plastic mask and cheap polyester jacket & trousers (one size fits all!). One was a Star Wars Stormtrooper, the other a ............ Red Shadow.

I don't know if anyone else remembers such a thing, and you may doubt me, but I have such an enduring memory of it. I even remember where the toyshop was.

Very cool Ironblood mask. I thought I remembered seeing something like that a few years back. Thanks.

Now that's the kind of thing we are looking for here :shadow: :D

I would love to find one of those. I sure hope your memory isn't playing tricks with you.

Though I have to admit that I have a very specific memory of owning a Battle Star Galactica gun when I was a kid, and loosing it at a hotel in Portland Oregon when I was about 7 or so. I remember placing it on the night stand that night, and it being totally gone the next morning. I thought for sure the hotel maid had come in that night and cleaned up while we were asleep. I made a huge fuss about it.

But my parent's don't remember me ever having such a gun [not unusual in itself] they don't remember me ever loosing anything like that, or complaining about it, and they have no idea which trip it even could have been. Especially since we almost always stayed with my Uncle when in Portland, and not a hotel.

At this point I'm pretty sure it was just a dream, but man does that memory still feel quite real.

I will certainly keep an eye out for a Red Shadow costume though. I heard a rumor of a 1994 Snake Eyes costume. As far as I know it was never released, but I now have the prototype for that costume. So you never know.

Given that reaction I thought I'd let you guys know that I've just listed some G.I. Joe factory sample masks eBay. I've got 2 different Dukes, and 2 different unreleased Roadblocks. I got all of them from the Collegeville Costumes warehouse liquidation sale that ook place in the late 1990's.

Now these do come with a word of warning. I've never found any proof that Roadblock was ever released, but that does not mean that he wasn't released. I can say however, that I've searched for the Roadblock costume for about a decade now, and I've NEVER found a store bought example.

By the same token, I believe that the Duke masks are factory samples. They came from the same source as the Roadblocks. In the case of the USA mask, it's almost identical to the retail versions I own. The colors are only slightly off. But the China mask has a much lighter skin tone than it should. Is it possible that these are just running changes? Yes. But like the Roadblock masks, I've never found retail versions of Duke that look exactly like these 2 versions.

So, if your interested, check out my eBay listings. If nothing else you can at least see what they look like,
