Have you tried using an auction sniper.

I havent. I just bid my max bid and go for it. Usually if I am around I bid that way.

By hand or via sniper, in both you have to fill in a maximum. In both cases it is possible somebody else outbids you. Place in your maximum, have a rest and you will never spend too much!
