Perhaps Hamleys ran a similar competition?
I don't know if it was a competition or not but I don't recall my local Beatties running any competitions for the Flagg  .

The guy that told me the story seemed to recall that the Flagg might of been onsale at that point in Hamleys and his Dad really wanted it (whether or not it was for his son or himself I don't know) and was on the edge of trying to buy it but the plan was dampered by his mum dragging them both out of the store.

I am quite tempted to send them an email to see if they have any records of the display or not.

What a little horror.

Baron, that "toy" looks more like a sinister 1960s evil "take over the world" thing that Dr. Mindbender or Blofeld would come up with!
what do you pour into it, ?uranium.....

one of my daftest memories was when my dad went shopping and I stayed in the car, and when he came back he said "I got you loads of action men", I was thrilled, only to find that this translated to being a "bag of generic green plastic soldiers" :(
