I'm certain I've seen an old war movie where a German tank commander, after encountering a piano wire stretched between two telephone posts, ends up looking like that... can't, for the life of me, remember what the film's called :-?

That wire method also appeared in Batman (the KGBeast used it on one of his victims) and the Simpsons (Snake tried it on Homer)

I think it was, yes.
I seem to recall that after the invasion of Normandy, the American jeeps were fitted with a large steel upright pole on the bonnet in order to break the wires that were being strung across the road.
