I don't know where the original Red Dawn crew got their kit, but it wasn't mock up. They had real Hinds, soviet rpg's, Tanks, APC all sorts. It made it quite believable. Now Top Gun using Tiger II's as Soviet fighters? No way could I suspend disbelief for that. They were Tiger II's.... they looked nothing like Soviet Fighters.

HUMBYYYY!!!!!!!!!!!! Shakes fist at ceiling....... Compare The Wrath of Kahn to the last Star Trek..... no comparison. ;-) Eric Bana vs Ricardo Montalban. Pfft.

Well, the only way is up from the last one. ;-) It was an OK movie, just not a great Trek film.

Never seen Red Dawn, I think it features the helicopter (possibly 2) from Blue Thunder...repainted as a Russian gunship doesn't it?

No, they were Puma's modified for Red Dawn. Found this;

VERY convincing mock ups. They went well out of their way.

Amerika rings a bell.......

The Hinds, T-72s and many of the armoured vehicles in the original Red Dawn were mock ups and not originals, in fact many were based on surplus US Army vehicles apart from the HInds which were Pumas, a trick that Rambo pulled as well. It shows you how good the props guys were and makes a real change from the likes of the Battle of the Bulge where the same tank is painted different colours to represent the different sizes.

They also made some mock up Yak 38 Forgers (Russian VTOL aircraft) Remembered this because at one point one of the Wolverines lobs a grenade into an engine intake air hatch behind the cockpit.
