Eds, there's all good advice here in this thread, but VAM is big old world!
I've said before, you may only want 3 or 4, but the likelihood of sticking to that is slim no matter how strong you feel atm.
I originally wanted 6. I had a little space on some shelves, so I bought 6 VAM's that were larger versions of Series 1 AF figures. I wanted no more.
9 months later and I had 80/90?, so many that I don't really know.
Once you get a few, you will almost certainly want more.
Buying-wise, I completely agree with Paul463. Buy some 40th from Modellors Loft or Lucy Quipment on ebay. You'll be paying fair prices and the stuff will be mint.
There's a tonne of old VAM on ebay and some of it is very well played with and knackered. VAM is cloth-based and wears away/baubles/stinks. 40th will avoid all that whether you buy it loose or moc....
Also, buy Volume 3 of Modellor's Loft's AM guide. It's all eagle-eyed stuff that you grew up with as a kid and will really help you decide what you want:
