there is a theory, though, that as soon as you arrive in the past, you create a divergent timeline and nothing you do will have any effect on your 'present'. this eliminates the grandfather paradox since you aren't in your own timeline, you can kill the old coot and still exist.

you could then live out the rest of your life in your subjective past.

this was the theory behind the Transformers story Target: 2006; Galvatron's convinced by destroying a repainted Skywarp (who appears to be Starscream) that he's in an alternate past and therefore by destroying Unicron in this 1986, he won't stop Unicron in 2006. He thus returns to 2006.

Later stories would explore the parallel timelines theory further with different stories set in alternate 2008s, including one in which Galvatron ruled North America after Unicron destroyed Cybertron...
