Good call, Baron. I always enjoy your reasoned opinions. Yes, I thoroughly enjoy DS9 and Babylon 5. Captive Pursuit is one of my favourite DS9 episodes.
Babylon 5 had poor acting, piss-poor storylines shoddy effects and THE single most RIDICULOUS line EVER: 'Get the hell out of my galaxy'. and it was pretentious. and a rip-off of Lord of the Rings.
Andreas Katsulas was absolutely mesmerising as G'Kar.
The Shadow War was expertly plotted and crafted. The slow-building menace was electrifying.
The FX were both ground breaking and award winning, I have never seen anything like a White Star or Shadow Battlecrab before or since.
The line was superb in context, spitting defiance at the gods. Oh, and it was "our" galaxy which is an important distinction.
I could go on and on and on and on and on and on and on and I'd still be right.

A little abrasive, but approaching a sensible response...
...of course, it's all a matter of perspective. Babylon 5 was named as one of the three greatest sci-fi shows of all time, alongside the original Star Trek and The Twilight Zone.
In short, Babylon 5 is AWESOME...
...from MY perspective

AND it had more hot chicks. including Leeta.
The show was written and SOLD TO NETWORKS as a five-year package. It was NEVER meant to run for seven years.
And hot chicks? There goes your reasoned response...
Besides, who's forcing you to choose? I love DS9 and B5. Personally B5 has the edge for plot development, mystery and intrigue whereas DS9 is slicker than oil on glass under moonlight. Yes, Garak and Quark are bloody fantastic, Sisko is hands down the best captain of them all and Gul Du Kat is a superb villain. But let's face it, the shows were both broadcast at the same time and DS9 was always one step behind, they didn't catch on to the ongoing story arc over individual episodes dynamic until season six.
Babylon5 was also a triumph of adversity. At the end of season 1 Straczynski was forced to sack his leading actor due to conflicts in the cast, at the end of season three, after the most spectacular cliffhanger ever, he was informed that he would only be getting one more season instead of the planned two. So he adapted the plot, rushed the Shadow War finale, dove straight in to the Earth War, axed the planned Centauri war and tied it all up in one season. And then got given the fifth season after all. So he had to rush a new season four finale, plug the gap in season five with a hastily improvised script, thread in the Centauri War and finish it off as intended. Oh, and his key captain refused to do the final season unless she got paid more than everybody else, so he fired her and found a replacement and wrote her in as well. How he achieved it without going mad is beyond me, I still think he was sabotaged by Trek. And the whole thing was done with hardly any budget.
And to be really pedantic there were five seasons, two pilots, five movies and an unfinished spin-off series. Nearer seven seasons worth than five. I also have to praise Christopher Franke's brilliant musical score.
You don't think Claudia Christian is hot then, SD?
f*ck me. Longevity is a mark of a a successful show? Its like saying Kylie Minogue is a better musician than J J Cale because she sold more records. By that mark B5 must have been better than TOS because that barely managed 3 seasons. Levi's make better jeans, Vic Bitter is better bear.... utter bollocks. Effects make a series? Tell that to Gene Roddenberry or the creators of the origianl Doctor Who.
How many other shows are rip off's? One of my faves is "The Forbidden Planet". Its Shakespeare. It doesn't make it less of a film, it makes it a genius adaptation. Its impossible to make somebody believe they aren't enjoying something because someone else has a rational (or irrational) argument either. Emotion is not quantitative. Never will be.
I agree with the Baron, and I think B5 was great. End of story. I think its great, therefore it f*cking is. I also think Voyager was well done Trek. Its not up for argument, that's how it is.
Incidentally I'll most likely be seeing Trek again on Sunday. Just for my own peace of mind, SC
