Speculation: Dr. Mindbender

Post by FrustratedPilot »

Anybody else think that maybe Dr. Mindbender might have been a former Red Shadow?

1) He's treated as a European, possibly a German

2) He was the one man responsible for introducing actual cloning to Cobra, after it had been used frequently by the Shadows (and the Nazi holdouts in South America)

3) He didn't join Cobra till after most of the Red Shadows had been liquidated

Nah. He was originally a dentist that fooled around with pain control and ended up transforming his mind to evil. Known as "Dr. Brainwave" (Marvel # 44) he joined Cobra by introducing the B.A.T.s (Battle Android Troopers) and the Mutant Plant Spore bombs. This convinced Cobra Commander to bring him aboard. After this, he created Serpentor and the 10 Clone Children that each represented one of Serpentor's parts... Lately it has been revealed that Mindbender also created some super space station that Cobra Commander was extremely interested in when he first joined Cobra.

I knew that stuff already.

I knew that stuff already. In fact, I have the Joe comic that introduces him and the comic with the profile you are citing.

But there is nothing in the profile that says he couldn't have been in the Shadows--and a man as old as him probably has more of a past than a simple go to dentist school--start a practice--go mad--join Cobra.

I see Mindbender eventually working for the US, and the Joes.

Nobody would like it, but it would be more likely that if captured, he would be hired by the government, ala "operation paperclip".

What do you think? He's definately still an untapped resource for stories, and really a blank slate for history expansion. The dreams of being buried alive by The Commander were some of the most interesting character insights we've ever been given about him (though the sequence he remembered was woefully inaccurate, it gave a neat insight).
