what in hell is a ha' penny?
Re: what in hell is a ha' penny?
I got a £50 note a couple of months back, eventually I had to go to a bank to change it, as no-one believed it was a real one.

Crom, I have never prayed to you before. I have no tongue for it. No one, not even you, will remember if we were good men or bad. Why we fought, or why we died. All that matters is that two stood against many. That's what's important! Valor pleases you, Crom... so grant me one request. Grant me revenge! And if you do not listen, then to HELL with you! -Conan the Cimmerian

Was it Scottish? I know what its like over the border! Someone once refused to accept a Scottish note from me in an Officer's Mess south of the border. It hacks me off at the best of times but in the mess was just stupid.Rude Kid wrote:I got a £50 note a couple of months back, eventually I had to go to a bank to change it, as no-one believed it was a real one.
When confronted by a difficult problem you can solve it more easily by reducing it to the question. How would the Lone Ranger handle this?

I have terrible trouble getting rid of Clydesdale and Bank of Scotland notes down here - excuses from shop staff range from 'Irish notes aren't legal tender' (since when was Clydesdale Irish?) to 'Our bank charges us to bank them' (utter bollocks). I remember half pennies well, especially as about two years ago I found a bottle of yellow food colouring in my mother's larder priced at 19 and a half pence... She's very frugal, my mother

had a similar thing a few years ago, i had a scottish five pound note, went to buy a newspaper and it was refused due to apparently there being many fake scottish five pound notes in circulation in the area. I pointed out that we were in weston super mare! And why the hell would they be in this area, but she said that if i didn't leave she would phone the police, so i left, the bitch!paul463 wrote:Was it Scottish? I know what its like over the border! The shop I work does accept 'em but the staff are a bit reluctant to take Scottish notes, especially high value ones, mainly because forgery reasons, as we don't handle so many of them it's a bit harder for us staff to spot 'em..we do have a poster on the staff room noticeboard on how to spot fake Scot's notes (as well as English ones), but understandably some people don't like to "risk it" with the larger notes (£20 & £50's)..even the two nice wee Scotts lasses I work with.
Not that we see many large notes mind, as most people seem to pay by card nowadays, we even get people paying for single photocopies by plastic @ 10p a go..the older folks seem to stick to cold hard cash..& I've often served poeple who look like that haven't got two pennies to rub together..only to have them produce a large wad of £20 notes when they get to the till
, well I suppose you don't make money by spending it
P.S. Having never been any further north than Blackpool
, are Scottish shopkeepers just as reluctant to take our notes as we are theirs?

it's the same over here with hong kong dollars & maccau dollars. you can shift the maccau notes @ 7-11 but if you get lumbered with coins your screwed! i made the mistake of changing my maccau dollars back @ a casino, they charged me a fortune then i found out i didnt need to change them!

by the way, maccau is an island near hong kong that used to be ruled by the portugese. it's part of china but has it's own government & gambling is legal so chinese tourists stream there! it's bassically just sh*t loads of casinos, including the biggest in the world. it out-grosses las vegas! we are thinking about maybe opening another studio there.

It is much the same up here. A long while ago while I was at Uni I worked in a shop and at that time there was an apparent rash of fake english tenners so we weren't allowed to accept them.Thundershot wrote:P.S. Was glad I left that company though I held the record for having to call all three emergency service out at seperate times. The first time someone set fire to the shop while it was open and we were in it, the second I was robbed at knife point nad the thrid a week before I left a little old lady thought it would be a good idea to have an Angina attack in the shop!!
