New STAR TREK discussion

Post by Crimson Rage »

Seeing as how the old thread has gone, I thought I'd kick it off again.

I guess most have seen the trailer by now. If not, check it out here. I must admit that, cool special effects aside (they're a given these days anyway!), I feel like I've lost an old friend. Kirk a 'cool' teen rebel, high-fiving his crew later on, bland Enterprise interiors, dodgy comic dialogue....

I guess I prefer my STAR TREK 'ideal' rather than 'real' and of course, science fiction that portrays people actually being nice to each other and getting along is no longer popular. Too bad really, as before it can happen, we have to believe it can happen. With every show squeezing that belief out of us, this 'dark & gritty' view of the future will become a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Yeah, saw it. The jury will be well out till its released I guess. I sorta agree with you, the start of the trailer smacks of Enterprise to me. did they learn nothing? Bring out a damn Voyager or DS9 film I say. Stop trying to reinvent the past.

I won't be having this discussion on an official TREK forum any time soon. Those places can be a bit... extreme. Almost as bad as discussing the Joe movie at Hisstank!

Why not discuss Action Force over there then?

I agree, the last episode of DS9 left it wide open for a film. Bring back the Defiant! Always liked when Sisko stood in the turbo lift and said "Defiant" in that commanding manner, he is my favourite Trek Captain. We can always hope I suppose.

I liked the look of the trailer with bad boy Kirk. Can't wait for it myself, just to immerse myself in Trek world for an hour or so! Easily pleased
When confronted by a difficult problem you can solve it more easily by reducing it to the question. How would the Lone Ranger handle this?

A big THANK YOU to my pal, Crimson, for reviving my STAR TREK thread... sadly lost in the cyberspace crash.

Yes, as I suspected the new film will be rife with continuity errors if the trailer is anything to go by... but I'm not gonna let that get in the way of my enjoying the film. If it's any good, that is  .

As for the TREK sites, I understand fully why you wouldn't wanna post there. Quick story;

As I've mentioned, Star Trek The Motion Picture is my favourite Trek film (though I can understand why it's unpopular with most). When I was a kid, I read Gene Roddenbury's novelisation of that film, and learned about his views on "New Humans", and how he hoped we'd all improve and evolve past the petty squabbles and need for conflict that Humans suffer from today. As a kid, this made an impression on me... and I foolishly believed that other Trekkers would aspire to improve themselves also.

Then I grew up and discovered the internet.

Just the other day I saw a bunch of fans arguing that because a load of characters in the 1960s version were played by the same background-extra, all those diverse characters must be related!?! Even the alien ones!

Nonsense. They're characters! In a fictional Universe. That's what the Fi part of Sci-Fi stands for.

Okay, rant over  .

Yep, I'm looking forward to the Trek movie... continuity glitches and all.

Kirk or Sisko? Death never stopped a Trek character. Besides Kirk's reflection is still in the Nexus and Sisko is immortal now;-)

Oh Sisko! Just in case my post got deleted, I am of the stance that DS9 pisses on all the other Treks from a great height, laughing as it goes.

The best Sisko "Defiant" elevator moment was in the Eddington episode.
