This is brilliant. Is that model something youd be willing to share?OllyOrc wrote:Apologies for hijacking the thread but I did some research into 3d scanners and they are all pretty bad at the moment (especially that XYZ hand held) unless you pay £3000 for a David2 3d scanner or the cheaper MatterandForm £380

However both hate 3d scanning small objects and cheaper ones can't handle most lighting and reflection, unless the model is painted matt magenta. 3d scanners create a point cloud that can later be converted to a mesh and saved as .STL or .obj for 3d printing or first fixing the mesh errors in 3d programs like Blender. A Finnish professor wrote a guide on how to make your own 3d scanner with 2 webcams and a projector but I also found that Autodesk offers free 123DCatch, that uses a series of photographs taken from all angles to generate a point cloud that can be converted into a mesh (looks promising from initial tests).
First trial using a Red Shadow (should really split body parts and scan individually)

Which will hopefully be faster and a better starting point than manually creating meshes in Blender (see below - First go at manually modelling a Red Shadow head in Blender using premade German helmet (so many different curves in the original head when u examine closely which take ages to recreate)

One of the best 3d scanners is the Faro arm (40k) used in automotive and aerospace, so will have to ask the guy at work to scan a few items - lol (although doubtful he'd risk doing it)

Re: www.action-figure-supplies.co.uk
Thanks but it's a fairly long way off before production, as I'm still improving upon the 3d scanning techniques of 123D, such as lighting and outlining curvature & features, by using tiny strips of masking tape to define and allow the scanner to capture better.
I've set myself a challenge by starting with a small detailed Red Shadow head (before the easier large VAM SAS Helicopter parts), since the plan is to print the helmets off in sections for Cosplay size, various ornament sizes, Action Man helmet size and Action force head size (front and back will be pushed together around a Radio Operator's head, mounted on a Red Shadow body). However, these are wild ideas that I do feel are achievable, given enough time and testing.
Original Red Shadow Head with masking tape and Magneta background using PC monitor - The cardboard arrows provide reference points that aid scanning. Export from 123D to Blender or Mesh Mixer, to fill in any gaps and smooth. However, I then use it only as a template, to make a more geometric and efficient 3d model with less faces, that will be used for 3d printing and in the Action Force Warhammer Dark Omen PC mod I'm creating (Have also been taking pictures of the Red Shadow in different poses, such as walking and shooting, from 8 rotations at a 45 degree angle to create sprites for the game).
Sprite preliminary size & detail test http://forum.dark-omen.org/index.php
Given enough time and accurate scanning, I would love to recreate all figures and vehicles in 3d for an eventual Armed Assault 3 mod. However, these are just ideas that are slowly coming together.

Ps. will start separate topic soon but would also like to perhaps work with http://www.action-figure-supplies.co.uk when ready to test 3d printing in the near future. Great to see his last post saying

Looking great. You're right though, it's not ready for production yet. I like the masking tape idea.

I reckon, well done. I'm waiting for the 50th Frogman to appear.
Let me tell you, Gunner La-De-Dah Graham, the British Army can fight anything! Intimate or not!

Just added a new t-shirt design I made to our Etsy store inspired by a certain villain's catchphrase:
