SteveD's "Other Collections" Thread

Post by SteveD »

The last few weeks I’ve really suffered from feeling crappy on Wednesday/Thursday of each week. You know – usual combination of life passing you by, dark nights, recession dragging on too long as not to even be remotely funny anymore – that type of thing.

So this week, in an attempt to beat the “Mid Week Mid-30’s Melancholy” I thought I would treat myself to finally casing up some of my “Other Ranges” in the lovely cases I got from GW Acrylics a few months back (Christian is now a member on here, even though he’s not that active, so drop him a PM for all your casing needs – they really are lovely!! Anyway, free plug over…)

And then I thought what better way to beat those blues than to perhaps pop a new post on here each week of the items I’d cased up that week, in a sort of ‘slow burn’ collection featurette!!

So where better to start than with the oldest ones I have……

The CLASH!!!
Or the the late70’s/early 80’s Clash of the Titans figures by Mattel! Not sure if these were ever actually released in the USA – if they were I’d guess it would be as MEGO figures, but I’ve never seen them.

These are copyrighted 1979 but I think they were probably released in 1980.

You can see by the figures they were pretty basic in terms of having the “T” crotches, and tended to suffer badly when played with in terms of paintwear etc.

Only 4 figures done, plus a massive Kraken & Pegasus (the winged horse) that came boxed on it’s own, or in a set with Perseus.

Often lost item with these loose is the sword and shield. And Calibos tail is usually snapped off too.

My favourite in this range (and one of my favourite figures ever!) is Charon – the devils boatman. He comes with not one, not two, but three articulations!!! The possibilities for play were…well, rather limited!! He could bend over, or lift his arms, meaning that my loose one was loose in both sense of the word as for many months he was bent over with Thallo stood slightly dodgy looking behind him.

Now, if only I’d thought to combine him with the “cracking one off” variant of Rosco P Coltrane from the Dukes range that would have been awesome (more on the Dukes in a few weeks!)

Anyway, the cardbacks:

These were just ‘raw’ cardboard, so they are really prone to speckling with age as can be seen in the one on the far right, but I love them! It’s really quite primitive and limited budget range, and not sure it was a big success commercially, but I love them!

Anyway, there we have it! Hopefully they might have cheered you up like casing them up cheered me! And apologies to some of the longer standing members who may have seen some of the shots of some of my items before.

Next week will either be Flash Gordon, or Buck Rogers, as I already break my original plan to do them chronologically…. :-)

Cheers!

I'll perhaps try to tidy the DVDS at some point too, and perhaps revolve them a bit to at least make it look like I watch something other than Chris Rock, Ross Noble and Madagascar!!

Nice one Steve.

PS MOC "Robot" still in the boot of the car, perhaps tonight I can get him in to the house............. ;)
When confronted by a difficult problem you can solve it more easily by reducing it to the question. How would the Lone Ranger handle this?

You'd best do mate - or he'll get impatient and smash his way out! And then it'll take some explaining as to why the boot lid is all bent to Mrs463!! :-)

Really nice Steve. Don't think I've ever seen these before and they are in great condition. 8)

That may not be the last time that expression is used over the course of this thread, as I aim for the obscure with lots of the collections! My Dukes of Hazzard and CHiPs figures take the Variantitus to whole new levels!!! Some of them are hard enough to get at the best of times, but try looking for a variant that is only a variant to fools like me - so much so I had to give them my own names (with some help from Andy90210 at times!)! It's part of the fun!!

So we shall all look forward (!) to finding out if I have the "non cracking one off" Cletus (Mego figure) on a Trafalgar cardback or the "short haired face like a smacked arse" Daisy Duke on a Mego cardback in the weeks to come.
