Yellowing

Post by The Kraken Wakes »

So, i have some hydrogen peroxide to un yellow parts of my flagg and battle platform. Everything i see on the web says to soak but sure we had a thread here saying you need the peroxide at the bottom of the container but you dont need the vehicle in it, just an airtight seal on the tub?

What depth do i need it at and also should i dilute? Strength i have is 35%...

Will it lighten any decals also?

Thanks

Yeah there was a thread, complete with pics.

I think it was stkhlmdk, or a North American BFTBer. Tub was only partially full. Think decals were off. Was part of an industrial decontam, large bits of kit one after another.

Currently decontaminating a bit of kit contaminated by attic mould stench and tried to find the now lost de-yellowing thread too for reference.

None of the stickers or paint on anything I have done has faded, Mat. Only issues I have had with that are metal, it's eat it for breakfast and if you soak paper decals too long in the solution the water content will damage them. It took 2 weeks before I got any damage mind you.

Cheers guys, looking forward to the guide but being the impatient idiot I am I think ill give it a whirl tomorrow with the TBPT as I have a couple I can mess with then ill try the Flagg depending on results.

Ill go with the vapour method rather than the soak, more due to me only having a couple of litres of 35% peroxide and ill never get it all covered unless I water it down a hell of a lot, then ill need super bright sunshine which is in short supply.

Thanks for being patient, so here's my guide to the use of peroxide!

WORD OF WARNING, PEROXIDE IS A NASTY CHEMICAL, USE SAFETY PRECAUTIONS SUCH AS GLOVES, GOGGLES AND HOSE EVERYTHING DOWN AFTER. KEEP PETS AND CHILDREN AWAY.
What you'll need:

-35% Tech grade Peroxide 1ltr is sufficent for a Defiant so there's no need to get more.

-Rubber Gloves & Goggles

-Masking Tape

-Clear container, IKEA do a great range that are "Lipless" so the tape can go on smoothly.

-A Garden Hose

Step 1: Prepare the toy by cleaning it off with warm water.

Step 2: Place toy in the bottom of the container and carefully pour the Peroxide in, If you get any on your skin wash under cool water, It can sting and turn fingers white but after half hour you should be ok :-)

Step 3: Place lid on and tape round the edges so no vapour can escape, then leave for 48hrs for the magic to happen. The sun will help but i've whitened stuff in darkness with great success

Step 4: After about 48hrs remove tape using gloved hands and without breathing in lift lid (In all honesty I've breathed shed loads in and I've not had issues) remove the toy and thorougly wash with garden hose.

Ta-Dah! all done.

Over the last year i've done pretty much all my yellowed toys, the best and longest lasting results are from coloured plastics. My TD has had about a 10-20% return but the cause may be because my colection is in the attic. I wouldn't recommend the process more than twice, I've wrecked a Payload figure after 3 attempts. Hope that helps.

Brilliant thank you, thats a great help.

Why would the attic particularly cause any return, would it be the heat up there? All my collection is in the attic but its a "proper" room of the house but it does get quite hot in the summer.
