Hi All,
Only just stumbled on this site. I'm so delighted that someone has taken the time and trouble to ressurect BAF and put it on the internet.
Rispeck due to the creators of BFTB, you are both sending me on a f**k off trip down memory lane!
Well since I managed to grab the name charly bourne I guess it's gotta be my first post. Before I start this, the AF stories were fantastic but lets not forget the rest of the comic.
Did anyone else enjoy the Charley Bourne stories? I prefered the 1940's France stuff to the World War One Flashback the comic did!
Also (If you the AF annuals) do you remember "The Bootneck Boy" stories? Quality stuff!
All the AF stories were top, "Nightmare" was pretty good, Hauptmann Grappner?....what a pussy...but he scared the sh*t out of me when I was 9yrs old!
What was your favourite story?
Charly Bourne and the Bootneck Boy!

Hello, yes I also just stumbled on, genuflected before the Baron (not a pretty site) and then wallowed in nostaglie...i'm only a young 'un, around 7/8ish when nicked them off me older brother but I still remember storylines like Deep Cover, Operation Bloodhound etc...
And Johnny Red rocked also, so i'm nicking his ID!;) If we ask nicely, any chance of other parts of the comics appearing, assuming Mr Baron possesses them? Particularly the Alien Invasion one, whatever it was called...I saw about 2 strips of that, one featuring some kind of combine harvester...and yet, like the girl in the white dress, not a month goes past...ok, maybe not;)
Charley Bourne was good, I liked both but did prefer the second world war one...i also remmeber the Nightmare stories shifting artists so it went from highly detailed to a slightly "rougher" style....and the ending in the castle over vats of acid.
Bootneck boy, was that the youngster who started off being bullied by his stepdad/brother and ends up leading the marines into Crete etc? And in the early Battle Action Force comics wasn't there a series called Hunter? Or something like that, two MI6 agents or whatever...plus the Ratpack;) Reality check, would we have won the war faster if every platoon had been as dysfunctional as them?
I could keep going but I won't! Well, not this time;) great stuff,
Johnny

My God!
I remember Jonny Red! They were quality stories too!
The Ratpack were cool too (if I remember one was called Turk, another called Dancer, but I can't remember any more of them..help??)
Your absolutely right about the Vats of acid towards the end of the storyline of "Nightmare". I remember it really well......After Ian was taken to Germany by Hauptmann Grappener he escaped from a Hitler Youth camp and meet up with an English Commando (I think his was called Wolf) who was waging a one-man-war against the damn boche!, they both went for it big style and ended up going to this castle (very much in "Where Eagles Dare stylee" and nearly got dunked in the acid/bio agent that Grappener was going to bombard England with..b*stard!
I don't know if it was in BAF or in Warlord magazine but does anyone remember a story strip called "Lofty' one man Luftwaffe"?

Battle Stories
Welcome aboard guys!
Charleys War and Johnnie Red were both quality stories, but I just prefer Johnnie Red, mainly as that guy had real style
The Baron (Jim) is temporarily offline as his PC is in for repairs.
Couple of other Battle Sites that are worth checking out are:
http://fanboy.frothersunite.com/battle.html
http://charleyswar.tripod.com/
There are rumours of 2000AD Megazine (the monthly) reprinting Charlie's war. Be worth keeping an eye open for!

BRILLIANT!!!
WOW!
Thanks for that Steve!
I've just looked at the front page and seeing Captain Snell with his trusty webley sends me right back. For the life of me I can't remember the name of the sniper (in the ww2 charly bourne stories) that Charly was sent to knock off......was it "holtz" or "helmhotz" somthing like that???
I'm about to go on a "bourne-fest"...look out Jerries!
I've seen it posted on this board somewhere about a CD copy of the AF scans, I'd be interested in cutting a deal with someone!
well done guys

"Hauptmann Grappener" - That's the German for Pussy!
Remind me, how did Charley's War end? I seem to remember the retreat to Dunkirk and then...nothing...
Oh, and while reading the back issues of the 'Force comics....Campbell of Z Force used to be "an international Playboy"...how long would he last in the real army??? Chinless Wonder!
Or am I taking comics too seriously again?;)
Johnny, off to fly me glider into a fortress again...

Sorry, guys, I don't think I'll be scanning comics again for a few centuries!!! BUT The Judge Dredd Megazine have confirmed they'll be reprinting Charley's War early next year! Yay! Thanks for the praise, BTW, I'm glad you like the site.
If you wanted to hunt down back issues of Battle then ebay is pretty much the only place, but worth bearing in mind is that Eagle comic reprinted lots of Johnny Red and Charley's War strip. Afraid I don't know which issues, but they might be a bit easier to find.
I always liked Death Squad, oh and The Sarge! HMS Nightshade weren't half bad either. I have a complete run now (just got my missing Summer Special!), and if anyone's looking to complete their Battles then drop me a line, as I have the comprehensive listing available. There's big patches where the printers went on strike for odd weeks.

Nice one Baron
Yeah,
I remember "The Sarge".
I'll keep my eyes skinned on the 2000ad site for more Charley Bourne news.
After taking a look at the site the Steve sent us a link to I felt a little embarrased that when I was a nipper some of the deeper issues of Charley Bourne were wasted on me.......I was only about 8 or 9 at the time. But the CB website was really well done, the author is a genius and I agree it was a ballsy move to run an anti-war story in a pro-war magazine like Battle.
20 years later and it all becomes clear......doh!

Gotta say I preferred the WWI strip in Charleys War, mainly due to Sergeant Tozer, or Old Bill as he was known. The Russian Front story was exceptional too.
I was amazed to discover that Joe Colquhoun drew the first run of Johnny Red strip too. Great stuff.
Did anyone catch the History of Battle Comic feature in the latest JD Meg?
