Action Man : Declassified

Time line and History for Action Man

TOP SECRET: FOR YOUR EYES ONLY

Image

1. Action Man's real name is Matthew Exler. He was adopted as an infant by the esteemed American rocket scientist and wealthy inventor Dr. Alfred Exler who happens to work with Sir Arthur Stong from the ISD.

2. Alfred already had an older son named Dorian; senior to Matthew by about eight years. Under the tutelage of Dr. Exler, both sons were geniuses from an early age and both were science prodigies.

3.However, Dorian was a bad seed; a born psychopath who ultimately was responsible for deliberately setting a fire which killed his parents. And in the aftermath of his heinous act of patricide, Dorian cleverly made young Matthew think that he was responsible for this "accident."

4. Each son received an inheritance of a handsome trust fund, so Matthew was shipped off to Europe by the estate's executor to complete his education in the finest European boarding schools. Like his father and brother, he continued to be drawn to science, at which he excelled.

5. Meanwhile Dorian, using his inherited wealth as seed money, and nurturing it with his raw, genius-level intelligence, ruthlessness and powerlust, not only grew his financial fortune by a multiple of thousands, but built up a vast private para-military terror organization staffed by mercenary soldiers called "Skullmen."

6. Using a combination of high-level computer hacking and corrupt government officials on his payroll, he destroyed all records of his own past and assumed the mysterious phantom identity of... DR. X.

7. Having graduated from college, Matthew was an out-of-sorts playboy displaying self-destructive tendencies. These were motivated by a deeply-rooted, intense guilt -- stemming from his long-standing conviction that he was responsible the death of his parents.

8. Mentally tormented and in search of inner peace, he learned of a bizarre cult called the Akesh Maharishis living in an remote ashram in the Himalayas. Journeying there in a final desperate bid for harmony and redemption, he immersed himself for over three years in their intensive regimen of physical conditioning, wilderness survival, mountain climbing, martial arts and ninja-like skills, yoga and meditation. By excelling in these activities, he earned the coveted "A.M." tattoo of the cult.

9. In deep meditative trances, he was finally able to recall the circumstances surrounding his parents' death in vivid detail -- and realize that it was not an accident caused by him, but murder at the hands of his brother.

10. He returned to the Western world with extraordinary mental and physical skills and an obsessive personal mission. He knew he must bring to justice the killer of his parents (and avenge his own years of suffering the guilt of thinking he had killed them). And at the same time, he must protect the world from his brother. For the sheer force of evil of Dr. X was known no better to anyone than to his younger brother Matthew -- now fully aware of the psychopathic depths to which his brother was capable of sinking in his lust for power and control.

11. Lacking anything remotely approaching the resources and paramilitary organization of Dr. X, Matthew decided to destroy his brother from within by infiltrating his organization. Allowing himself to be recruited (his brilliance in both martial arts and science made him extremely desirable to the X organization), he was further trained in weapons and munitions, multi-vehicle operation, military strategy and terror tactics; and, significantly, he learned everything he could about the personality of Dr. X and the structure and machinations of his vast empire. He rose quickly in the organization, all the while biding his time -- and waiting until he knew enough to destroy not only Dr. X himself, but his entire global network.

During this period of time Action Man falls in love with Ursula another new recruit for Dr. X who also rose quickly through the ranks.

12. After sometime working undercover as a Skullman Action Man is ready to take down Dr. X out. In Paris he is torn and worried about Ursula for when Dr. X would fall so would she. Ursula starts to notice something is wrong with Action Man for the first time at the Eiffel Tower .

13. Shortly after this, Matthew is assigned to a
mission with Dr. X and his Skullmen, but on the mission they cross paths with the Action Force . So on that fateful night at the chalet in Switzerland. Matthew blew his cover -- and everything that he had worked for -- to save the innocent lives of Action Force and Jacques. The result was the explosive concussion, combined with traces of Dr. X's psychotropic drugs, which caused him to lose his memory -- including his vast knowledge of Dr. X's empire, Dr. X's own personal past and Matthew's shocking relationship to Dr. X.

14. Now his memory only surfaces in occasional, uncontrollable TRACE MEMORY FLASHES -- subliminal flashes of disconnected knowledge or non-sequitur images from his past life.

15. Meanwhile, Dr. X learned the true identity of the
infiltrator who knew so dangerously much about his
organization, who came so close to taking Dr. X's entire
empire down. He also learned that this infiltrator -- his brother -- now has amnesia. This means that all the information so dangerous to Dr. X is locked away -- for the moment irretrievably -- in Matthew's concussed brain.

16. In order to try to ensure that Matthew's memory does not return, Dr. X has used his extensive technological resources and worldwide network of corrupt officials to erase any trace of his brother's personal history and identity.

17. Just as the person known as Dorian Exler disappeared from all private and public written records, it's now as if Matthew Exler never existed either...

Thus ends what is written in the Series Bible

Image

18. Natalie and Knuck convince him to join the new Action Force team and together promise to help Action Man regain his memories.

19. Over the next two years with the help of Natalie and Knuck they fight Dr. X, Ursula, Dr. Gangrene and his Skullman and bit by bit Action Man regains a little of his lost memories by Putting pieces together every time he is reminded of things.

20. After 2 years of pursuing Dr. X. Dr X is finally thought to been killed by Action Man. However Action Man has mixed feelings on this, on one hand he is happy that his reign of terror is over, but on the other he is saddened as well, as Dr. X held many secrets to Action Mans past and memories. Memories he doesn’t believe he will ever get back. Action Man still does not know what his real name is or anything about his family.

21. The Action Force team is disbanded and Action Man goes to do some Adventuring, he also does some work for British secret service and the ISD where he meets Sir Arthur Strong. Sir Arthur Strong discovers who he is, as he worked with his parents many years ago for the ISD. Action Man learns of his parents and their involvement with the ISD, but their mysterious death is still unknown. Action Man also still doesn’t know who his brother is or what happened to him after the fire but he learns alot from Sir Arthur Strong.

22 . Action Man teams up with the G.I. JOE Night force on a mission to hunt down a Rouge Agent who has temporarily allied themselves with Cobra.

23 . DR. X Returns and a new Action Force is assembled, it consist of Red Wolf and FLynt. Action Man is asked to lead this new Action Force against Dr. X. Action Man agrees.

24. In the second year of the reinstatement of the Action Force, Action Man welcomes Anna Belle Strong,( Sir Arthur Strongs Daughter ) code name Rebel, to the team.

the first half is from the cartoon series bible well the 1996-97 cartoon that is but the toy and the comic also fits in as it was the same continuity, I did some interviews with the shows creators ( 1996-1997 show) and they had only this part of the series bible anymore. Too bad as the rest of the series bible would have been nice to read too.

This also takes into account the 2004 2005 and 2006 CGI movie trilogy , comics and toy lines as well as the Hasbro 3 and 3/4 inch night force version that they made, which pernamently and officially cemented Action Man into the GI JOE universe.

the extreme sports star CGI series from 2000 is out of continuity and is a completely different action man and so doesnt fit into anything here and thus isnt mentioned ( thank GOD )

Since Action Man will be in the RED DAWN comic I thought it would be appropiate to make a declassified thread on him here.

glad you liked it

it should be noted that there does seem to be a motion at hasbro to make ACTION MANs official REAL name to be ALEX MANN.

While this name first appeared in the terrible extreme sports star CGI series and toy line it does not mean its the SAME person. Just like dukes name is always Conrad Hauser but was a different person in sigma six and RAH continuity.

So Acttion Mans names above ( as shown in the official series Bible), was never officially revealed, hasbro could officially change it and to be honest I actually support this decision if hasbro was to do it.

I like the AM as in Alex Man being used for ACTION MAN basis of his code name it works quite well I think

with the new GI JOE movie most likely featuring Action Man it will be nice to have him back and with GI JOE

WOW!!! You weren't kidding about those SPOILERS! What a neat background Action Man has! Now I have a question... how much of this background story actually made it onto the cartoon, via storyline and flashbacks, and how much of this was simply from the writer's bible? Either way, I doubt I'll be able to get a hold of the series anythime soon, so I'm glad that you posted these spoilers here.

What a real shame that this series didn't go on longer!

ya I know, lots in there for sure and man you can tell the writers were really really trying to add real depth to this cartoon

a lot of it was hinted at almost all of it was hinted at but nothing was ever spelled out, for example in flashbacks you do see the house burning and action man thinking he did it, but you dont see his brother ( Dr. X ) causing it and then blaming

its really cool to watch the series before reading this and then going back and watching it again after reading this, youll several times be like OH MAN I know I know what they aren revealing!

Eye of Agamotto wrote: and how much of this was simply from the writer's bible?
I say 75 percent of it was revealed in the Series Bible

Oh man was it , whats makes it even worse too is that instead of building on the incredible story this series and its creators had in the works, hasbro scrapped it and gave us the AMERICAN TEEN EXTREME SPORTS STAR mainframe CGI series next and completely scrapped this story.

Now when Americans think of Action Man they think of that terrible series and they hate ACTION MAN because of it and I dont blame them.

Had mainframe continued the story that was begun by DIC we could have had a great great story and continuity for Hasbros ACTION MAN

Im just glad that they went back to this Action Man with the 2004 , 2005 and 2006 movies, THANK GOD!

but too bad they didnt use Natalie Poole in the movie instead of REBEL

Totally. I really enjoy her in the series. Rebel is just Scarlett with a British accent (hot accent at that). Now, what is the signifigance of Natalie's fish that dangles around her neck, if any? And is there anything about her and her relationship with AM in the series bible? And Knuck, as well?

I want another Action Man series! And not something dumbed down and animated like Sigma 6, but honest-to-goodness old school animation and good story telling like the original series! Or at least give us some comics with the cartoon series team! Make it happen, Hasbro! :x

the only part of the series Bible that the writers / editors and DIC could find was ACTION MANs part of it, sadly they couldnt find anymore of it which is a real shame because Man I would have loved to see one on everyone else

The Ursala Declassified thread info came from me watching the series writting down everything and then also taking info from the ACTION MAN part of the bible to fill in the blanks but Im sure there was probally more for her too

I know Natalie Knuck and Dr. X would have been super interesting as well too

and ya I want a comic at least continuing this story!

Hasbro really really has screwed up the marketing of Action Man IMVHO.

They need to make a GOOD comic, some New toys that dont feature the 12 inch dead model ( my vote goes to signa six design and scale ) and bring back this storyline for Action Man

I never got into the Sigma 6 design, although I tried. I WOULD, however, get any Action Man and his team and Dr. X in the 8" Sigma form if ever they did it that way. GI Joe and it's storyline just doesn't hold any interest for me anymore, therefore the Sigmas and 25th Anniv figures don't get a second thought from me in any way, shape, or form. Sad, but true.

What I REALLY like about Action Man is the very small cast of characters. I mean, even if you combine the regular animated series and the CG series characters together into one story and toyline, you still have a small cast. It's easily manageable, and easy to follow. Then you have AM, Natalie, Knuck, Red Wolf, Flynt, Norris, Jauque, and Raid. On the other side, you have Dr. X, Ursula, Gangrene, No Face, Tempest, Skullmen, etc. AH man, I hype myself up and there's nothing to satisfy the hype!

Jamar, have you noted that Doctor X's real name has something special?
I mean, Dorian Exler... Dor Ex... Dr X!
