Blood for the Baron!

I raised this in another thread, but it didn't seem the right place to put it (Toys - GI Joe - 'Flint'), so here goes!

There are so many great war films (and bad ones!), three in particular that I liked when I were a lad were: 'A Bridge to far' (Sean Connery, Anthony Hopkins, Micheal Caine), 'Wild Geese' (Richard Burton, Roger Moore, Richard Harris) and 'The Dogs of War' (Christopher Walken, Paul Freeman, Tom Berenger).

Do they still "make 'em like that anymore"?

My favourites are Kelly's Heroes, Dirty Dozen I, Zulu (not modern war but still a war film) and Platoon. I watched Hart's War the other night which was really good. There are more I like though.

the eagle has landed, the iron cross, black hawk down, where eagles dare, bridge on the river kwai, 300, 300 spartans, a bridge too far, cant think of any more but there are stacks of war films i saw as a kid which i cant remember

A Bridge Too Far, Zulu, Where Eagles Dare, Cockleshell Heroes are the ones that spring to mind.

Oh yes, Where Eagles Dare has always been a great film and a favourite of mine. Everything is just right I'd say. A Bridge Too Far is a very good watch and I have a soft spot for The Great Escape and The Longest Day.

There are some quite good modern era films - I watched Black Book and Female Agents recently and enjoyed both. The Pianist was a strong film too.

The Dam-Busters, 633 squadron, Mosquito Squadron are all great. gotta love the Longest Day too.

gotta mention big duke's Nam flick 'The Green Berets', sure it's a patriotic flag-waver and Duke was a right-winger, but it's still a decent flick and it's got George Takei - Sulu in TOS - in it as an ARVN officer.

I've seen 'Platoon', 'Hamburger Hill', 'Full Metal Jacket' and 'Apocalypse Now', never seen 'the Green Berets'.

I always liked John Wayne, 'The Searchers' is a personal favourite. I think I will track 'the green berets' down on the weekend. If it's not in the TV listings I will look for the DVD.

One of my favourites is 'Breaker Morant'; a very powerful film with two great performances from Edward Woodward and Bryan Brown. I'm surprised there haven't been more Boar War films, as it was really the first 'modern' war both in terms of how it was fought and the involvement of the media. It was arguably our Vietnam, and certainly things were never the same afterwards.
