Had a real topper from one of the trainees at work today, I was talking to her about sciency stuff and at the end of the conversation she stated "you're really intelligent" (The compliment) She then said "you're just like my boy friend he is so intelligent he is socially inept" She left everyone in stitches and me with my chin on the floor!

was she aware of the faux pas?

i would've said 'i'm intelligent enough not to have insulted someone like that.'

Yup she is as blunt as a blunt thing, she then tried to dig herself out of a hole to no avail!

Actually the best thing is to let her have her mistake. Of course the ultimate comeback would have been to suggest that if her boyfriend IS socially inept then they make a great couple! However any response would make you look bad, so you did the right thing and people will probably respect you more for it.

Thanks Malcolm, I agree with you. There is a promoted post coming up so I have to keep my nose clean just now.

The irony is that her own comment was socially inept in itself.
