How many vehicles were different?

Post by volleydan »

It seems that I am always learning things about the UK line, particularly when it comes to just how many vehicles you guys got in unique colors. Specifically, I always seem to be finding more items that were released in the brighter green of the Z Force instead of the olive drab green that they used in the US. I know of the following:

APC/ATC
Command Centre
Wolverine
PAC RATs
HAVOC
Rolling Thunder
FLAK
Whirlwind
RAM
MOBAT

Most people know about the tank, motorcycle, headquarters, ATC, FLAK, and Whirlwind. It's also pretty easy to find out about the Wolverine and PAC RATs because they are often listed as variants.

What blows my mind is that you rarely ever see/hear of the HAVOC or Rolling Thunder mentioned....so I'm wondering if anyone can educate me on whether there are others?
The mere fact that a flamethrower even exists is proof that someone once said to themselves: "You know, I'd like to set that guy over there on fire, but I'm just not close enough".

It's because they weren't released by Palitoy, but under the later Hasbro Action Force, which is essentially GI Joe under another name. I did not know that there were any colour variations from this era.

Chopper is currently working on this very topic for the archive.

Working very slowly indeed. I can't wait to get the colouring out of the way and back into it. The Rolling Thunder was a variant, volleydan? That's peaked my interest. So far I've managed to track down one Euro specific Joe for the archives (thanks to SteveD). Its becoming a minor obsession, Tiger Force may be next.

Hmmm, I had to buy my Rolling Thunder hubcaps from the States. I assumed they were lost by the original owner but now I'm wondering if they were a UK/US variant.

To further complicate matters, it appears that not all UK Rolling Thunders were released in the brighter green. Most appeared to actually be the same as the version released in the States.

In five years of hunting, I have only ever seen one on EBay (and sadly, I was outbid by someone using that darn sniper software).

I saw one of the HAVOCs on EBay.uk about two months ago. Again, I lost to a sniper. I actually learned of this one at last year's Joe Convention, but it was busted up and missing parts and the seller still wanted $30 for it. If the accessories had been the same as the US version, I might have done it, but they were not....the small guns, etc. were red, not the "normal" orange color.
The mere fact that a flamethrower even exists is proof that someone once said to themselves: "You know, I'd like to set that guy over there on fire, but I'm just not close enough".

I have picked up a few duplicates of vehicle missiles , and I`ve found that they are a different shade to the ones I already have.
The Conquest , X19 and Rattler are a few that spring to mind.

Sniping is part of the Baron's training!
When confronted by a difficult problem you can solve it more easily by reducing it to the question. How would the Lone Ranger handle this?

I'm aware of the following Hasbro Action Force variants:

Rolling Thunder - Shade of Green / Red Accessories
HAVOC - Shade of Green / Not sure of the accessories
SLAM - Red Accessories
Tiger Force Sting - Different VAMP body

Cheers

Is there any chance you guys could put you're heads together and come up with a basic idea of how many UK variants there were? Once I'm done listing the Marvel era AF, I'll be moving on to Euro Joe's and it'd be a great help.

Cheers

We need some UK names here too before everyone gets confused!

VAMP - Panther / Night Attack
HAL - Laser Exterminator
FLAK - Attack Cannon
PACRAT - Dart / Lane / Shaft
MOBAT - Battletank
APC - ATC
RAM - Rapid Fire Motorcycle

Yep, my SLAM and HAVOC both have red accessories (I had to hunt the SLAM missiles to make them Z Force compatible).
