The most ridiculous toy ever?

I've been sneakily collecting Flash Gordon's 1979 Mattel range for a while now, and was limiting it to the MOC figures. To complete my set I've just had to buy a set that has the final two MOC figs I need (MOC Vultan!!!! It's the Flash Gordon equivelant of getting a Z Force Minesweeper! I'm so pleased! many, many thanks to Flint for your help my friend!) and it includes with it a sealed in box one of these:

Surely one of the most ridulous toys since CB McHaul and his CB Radio trucks and "YMCA Knocking one off" ways? It's like a huge, inflatable zepplin, masquerading as a rocket ship! It's really rare, especially in an unopened box, but I'm so desperately going to want to open that sucker up and blow it up (not in the "Muton on Bonfire Night" sense of the expression) just to see how huge it is!

And no, that's not why I was enquiring before about Red Plastikote paint being flexible, but it does give me an idea...

That looks like something out of that Val Kilmer classice "Top Secret". I hope the lad plugs it in to the correct voltage......

Apart from the huge "FLASH GORDON" emblazoned on the side, that's actually pretty cool!
Is it based on the (excellent) Filmation series?

Not sure - I think they were based on the comic books. They predate the film at 1979, and bizarrely there's no Dale Hardon, sorry, Ardan, figure. The card backs are awesome - showing Dr Zarkov and the Beastman as "coming in 1980". I was only 2 then!

It has a weird little pod attached to the side, that is where the figure sits, so i'm certain it would topple over if you ever attempted to stand it upright ready for launch.

Did the same child advertise loads of toys from the era? That haircut seems to ring a few memory bells?

Certainly can! (it's the only pic I have of one until I get mine) - it's the closest thing you'll ever get to a Brian Blessed action figure!

Now all we need is a Bill Oddie action figure and we can recreate one of my most fovourite and surreal TV experiences ever when they went birdwatching together! Not sure if they spotted any hawkmen or not, but it was all very surreal - and watching Brian trying to talk quietly had me in stitches. And now I'm off on the most weird tangent of all time, so here's the picture-

Definately is! I was worried that Dale Arden as a cliched arse-kicking, gun toting empowered female secret agent might drag the comic down, but it actually works quite well.
