25th Anniversary Celebrations - 1983 Quiz

Okay, here's the deal. I'm in SUCH a great mood this evening after reading this site and all the posts, especially after a sh*tty looooong day at work writing creative tenders. Such a good happy mood in fact, that I've decided to add even more goodies to the celebrations of my favourite ever comic. As we all know, Battle Action Force is 25 years young today and so along with all the efforts of Baron and Jamar and all the generous members with the big draw later tonight.... I wanted to offer up a chance for someone to win a sketch card of their choice from either one of 2 artist mates of mine.

Hopefully, this will help prolong the day and ensure all forum members around the world have a chance to win something else in honour of our lovely friends who were born at Palitoy.

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

"So, along with the big draw later on, how do I try and win something else on this special day then?!"

Basically, everyone who send all (or the most) correct answers to the 1983-related questions below and PMs me the answers by 12:00midday GMT on 09.10.08, will be entered into a draw to win a card of their choice by either Lance or Grant. Simply send your answers/guesses for each of the questions to me via PM by the deadline to be in with a chance - remember to include which artist you would like to have, as well as the character from Action Force you'd like them to draw for you. To help you decide which style you might like, a couple of sample Storm Shadow cards from my collection are below for reference. If you were a big fan of Stormie, I just might be tempted to let you have one of my originals instead:

Image Image
(left: Lance, right: Grant)

On October 8th 1983.....

1. Where did the band R.E.M play a gig?
2. What was the size (on the Richter Scale) of a moderate earthquake that hit Central New York?
3. What song was #1 in the UK Music Singles Chart?
4. What age in years was Joe Colquhoun, the artist behind 'Charley's War', the comic strip in Battle/Battle Action Force?
5. Who is that bloke featured laying on a desk in the competition header image at the top of this thread?
6. How many Action Force 'Red Shadow' figures did SLIPPY own as a 7 year old boy?

So, please answer or guess the above questions and send them to me via PM on this message forum.... remembering to include your preferred artist and character choice.

Good luck everyone and bear in mind the closing date is 12:00midday GMT on 09.10.08.

Thanks and let's all enjoy and savour the day and this cracking community.
:jammer: :quarrel: :vulture: :wolf: :skip:

Steve

PS: To make it all fair, I'm now sending Baron a quick PM containing the answers - to ensure everyone knows it's equal chance across the board.

25th Anniversary Celebrations - '83 Quiz: ANSWERS AND WINNER

Post by slippy »

Hey gang.

"It's 5pm, Sports Report and here's the football results read by James Alexander Gordon.
Aston Villa nil, Queens Park Rangers three. Millwall one, Chester City, one....."

Oops, wrong channel. Right, well here we are. Results time. Thanks to everyone who bothered to take part in this extra competition on the 25th Anniversary Day and well done for using GOOGLE 'til your fingers bled. To put you out your misery, as well as those people who merely played along at home for fun (I know there were at least 2 of you!), here are the official answers:

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

On the 8th October 1983.....

1. Where did the band R.E.M play a gig?
Irvine Auditorium, University of Penn., Philadelphia, PA

2. What was the size (on the Richter Scale) of a moderate earthquake that hit Central New York?
5.2 (but would have accepted 5.1)

3. What song was #1 in the UK Music Singles Chart?
Karma Chameleon - Culture Club

4. What age in years was Joe Colquhoun, the artist behind 'Charley's War', the comic strip in Battle/Battle Action Force?
56 (He was born in 1927)

5. Who is that bloke featured laying on a desk in the competition header image at the top of this thread?
Bill Gates of MICROSOFT

6. How many Action Force 'Red Shadow' figures did SLIPPY own as a 7 year old boy?
slight trick question, as it was ZERO - I finally got some when I moved to Cornwall aged 9

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

TOP 3 (*insert cheesy drum roll here*) were:

1st: Chopper (with 5 out of 6 and also close to last question)
2nd: SteveD
3rd: PoetFlint

::

Great stuff Chopper - please let me know which artist you would prefer, along with the Action Force/GI Joe Character you'd like to see. Or you can always make it a surprise!

But hey, seeing as it was such a groovy day and I hate to see people not win (heck, I know how that feels after the draw, hah!) I've decided to offer up the 2 'Storm Shadow' cards pictured as runner up prizes... so SteveD gets the Grant one and PoetFlint the sketch by Lance.

Weeeeell, he never was my fave character anyway so at least he can go to deserving homes!

Okay, well done everyone and all 3 winners please PM me your addresses (and choice of stuff in the case of Mr Chopper).

Take it easy,

Steve

Wow, this never happens to me. Thanks Slippy, I'm stoked.

I think I'll have to say "Chopper" by Grant would be awesome. I'm going to frame my winnings and put them on the wall with a big BFTB motif I think. There ya go, you have to be in it to win it I guess.

One word of warning tho mate, watch out for the Aussie birds. I married a Sheila from Melbourne and now I'm in all kinds of strife;-) Kids, dog, mortgagae...and watch out for the drop bears too....

Cheers

Wow! That REALLY cool of you Slippy! I'm over the moon! Even if I'd won I'd have been chuffed to get that Stormie pic, so to get it for coming second! :storm: :storm: :storm: :storm: :storm: :storm: :storm: (he's smiling beneath that Ninja attire!)

Thanks again man, and it has even inspired me to (possibly) finish the Stormshadows Antipodean Adventure thread (so not all good news this week for board members!)
