Standby, Standby

Post by Quickfire »

Read about this movie wrapping up several years ago in Der Stürmer and, although perhaps a mildly interesting coda to the fetishisation of UK SF in the land of offshore casinos, royals, bad tatts and alcopops, assumed it had been junked due to the proliferation of imitations. Was perhaps wrong about that.

Based on Rusty Firmin's memoire, reading about the movie back in the day reminded me of the original and best reenactment put together by Mr. Firmin and his B Squadron associates. Thought about posting the only youtube version that exists as a corrective to the imminent film but didn't, cos, you know, scheisse happens.

Feel a little more motivated to get on with posting it now.

Dunno precisely what Steve Scott was doing after losing his job on digital F1 in 2002 (Channel 5?), but he proceeds to present the original version of the Carlton 1996 adaptation of the Iranian Embassy siege.

Initial narration by Soldier I, the original UKSF chronicler c. 1989 who, after being (the only man in the British Army) certified sane after a number of engagements including Mirbat, had rejoined B Squadron. In 1984 a certain young McBackstab would join B Squadron and note Soldier I's decision to publish a memoire and forego various links with the Regiment.

Rusty Firmin had spent c. 1992-3-4 post-Regiment as a security consultant in Bosnia, mainly delivering armoured Land Rovers to Bosnia for ITN. Hence his ITV contacts leading to this reenactment and five or six episode series (one was banned at the time post-IRA ceasefire. Soldier I has a problem with the Irish despite being northern.)

At some point in 94 or 95 one of the buildings in Prince's Gate is sold and due for refurbishment: possibly it's what is now the F1 HQ but TBC right now given Bernie Ecclestone's retirement, he probably bought it and leased back to F1 (he lived down the road in Chelsea at this time). TV production company pounce and get permission to film and total the building adjacent to the still active Embassy.

Note original footage carefully used to tell the story. Nice use of Regent Parks barracks too, dunno if it's sold off now like the Duke of Yorks. Also John McAleese rather casual - decides to take a starring role later. Walks around with paid volunteers from 21 who were later fired after this broadcasted but given the option to redo selection. They were all the contemporaries of Bear Grylls who might have taken part if he hadn't had his broken back in an accident that he's never really explained properly in about ten instances whilst scouting for boys.

Also notable - first footage of the negotiator/s who would later take part in a reenactment as part of cognitive therapy.

Part 2: Story tells itself as protests occur and initial recces and intel gathering occur. Possibly some of the original police material shown.

Can't remember if the discussions between negotiator and Salim are original but, if not, very close imitation. Will return to that in part 4.

Also the sound dude working for Carlton had got a temporary licence to start mixing in music from the Leon movie soundtrack. Not used again.

Nice reenactment of move to Prince's Gate and target appreciation and initial IA committee: also a knowing nod to the Embassy World Snooker Championshis ( :stake: ... live from the Crucible...)

Part 3: Steve Scott regales us again.

Notable here you hear the jumbos coming in much lower than usual on Heathrow approach - all part of the plan to distract the hostage takers and cover a variety of other noises from intel gathering (a British Gas team doesn't feature but they had the same MO). That would have been a plane every minute or so back then.

What you'll also hear in this clip is the original police radio audio and what is probably the original negotiator audio in various segments of the reenactments. You'll hear how quickly it went to weapons free after the distraction charge goes off and initial entry is made. It was never established who in B Squadron had got hold of that audio and it was never used again in repeats or other reenactments.

All the kids from 21 don't hood up properly. All the original B Squadron crew bandy about in various roles, not least John McAleese at the back door instead of the balcony. By then they were enjoying themselves.

Some other trade secrets of the :stake: variety might be revealed:

:stake: Noises in the wall
:sas: False promises
:attack: The whole psychological game was wearing them down
:eagle2: All I heard in the ear pieces was GO GO GO

Part 4:

:stake: The rollerball had started.
:attack: Got to follow it down, down into the cellar.
:sparrow: Stun grenade out
:eagle2: No sledge, no shotgun, gotta drill the locks.

Part 5:

Doesn't feature the local constabulary stopping :attack: dragging the final terrorist found in the garden back into the burning building, but, then, not many versions of the story do. He's living in Peckham now, enjoying life.

Job done. ENDEX.

And so the story ends, if not for the second trailer for Six Days released last week: note how many elements and atmospherics perhaps influenced by the original reenactment, from ubiquitous Transit vans, to Regents Park barracks, the main distraction charge in stairwell, even bandy legged random on the back door approach. Wonder if it was one of the numpties fired from 21 in 96 getting a final payday ...

Glad they added Takavesi falling after having his abseil rope cut, stuntman not on fire though before that particular thirty foot freefall, was a near catastrophe. Takavesi went on into the Embassy and slotted the invader on the stairs, then had a son with the nurse who treated his burns: he can be found today in Mesopotamia environs with what remains of our generation.

Firmin and Soldier I still banned from Hereford.

Yowzer, I'll be off to see that one. I do think it needs this theme though;

Bugger me, partly filmed in Auckland.
Let me tell you, Gunner La-De-Dah Graham, the British Army can fight anything! Intimate or not!

35th anniversaries of B Squadron getting on the trucks at Ascension for Operation Mikado [one way trip to Rio Gallegos - operation scrubbed] and then dropping into the South Atlantic at night for recovery by Royal Navy (HMS Plymouth?) must have passed in last 72 hours.

Ditto a certain one-way-trip Sea King diverting to Chile. Dropped off the passengers before burning the evidence and a week of E&E.
