Collectaholics on BBC2

Is anyone else watching this sh*t on BBC2? (Sorry guys outside the UK who don't have the TV channel)

The show is called Collectaholics. I don't know if this is the first episode, but I've never seen it before.

It appears to be viewing various people's collections in their own homes, antiques, crockery, stuffed animals, salt & pepper shakers etc

It's winding me up....

On the surface it appears to be informative, educational and entertaining. Underneath I can't help feeling it makes the collectors look like they want to sell up, or perhaps they should sell. Either that or they are mentally ill or something. They insist on putting a price on everything and informing the collectors what they may 'fetch at auction', Antiques Roadshow style.

Perhaps I'm being over the top here but I just find it insulting when a collections success if you like is purely based on what it is worth in a sale.

I don't want to sell my collection and have no idea what it's worth. Don't need to know really, I'm not a dealer. I didn't get the stuff to make a penny on it. I bought them because I love them. They make me happy.

I'm interested to know what you guys think if you caught this show.

The next episode features a Star Wars toy collector (on in two weeks time apparently) with over 35,000 pieces in his collection. The trailer makes it look like his wife hates him and wants him to get rid of his collection. I'm already angry.

Sorry guys, very negative post from me. I'm going to look through some of my collection.....;)

If everybody sold up collections, or parts thereof, would be worthless. I'm with you, Shaun, its mine..... all mine....... my preciousssssssssss..........

Haven't seen the show down here, we do get Toyhunter, but that's a bit dodgy IMO.

I sort of heard some of it - I was cooking tea at the time it was on - and have to admit I heard enough to share your opinion - patronising bullshit! And they were clearly trying to adopt the whole "let's laugh at these freaks" type of tone to the show. Perhaps we should all be the same as every other chavvy mother f*cker out there and only be interested in who will win X factor and what ant & dec are up to this week in their 'cheeky chappy' ways....

I saw the episode that featured the beer can collector & railway enthusiast.

I can see the merits in slimming down & concentrating on a much narrower range of items, selling off some pieces to finance other purchases or better display conditions... but you're right about the general tone of the show.

I caught about five minutes of it and that was enough to put me off, it was indeed patronising and implied that the collectors would be better off selling everything.
One of the lads had a set of antique kitchen chairs that are now worth a lot more than he bought them for... but he uses them every day... how dare he enjoy and make use of them when he could sell them for a profit!

There's one about a Star Wars collector coming up so you might here me ranting at the telly echoing out of Kent (its James from Jedi News if you are interested). But I agree the tone is wrong a bit too sneering, look down our nose at you which is a shame as it could show that collectors are normal people (thought the biggest freaks this week were the lot frequenting spitalfields market, they all looked like vacuous, material, fashioned brainwashed dullards).

Rant off.

I don't know why I watched it to be honest. I don't usually watch 'regular' programmes of an evening. Can't stand the soaps and luckily neither does my missus. On the one occasion I stray from working through Breaking Bad on Netflix or Walking Dead on Fox, I stumble on this, think it's going to be great then end up ranting at the telly. I may as well let my kids continue to brainwash me with Cbeebies.......that reminds me.... must go, Mr Tumble is on in five minutes.

It was me that valued the Star Wars collection, and it was done over the phone, I just said there is no one in the world that will buy this, it will never sell for big money if the outlay is to be done in one hit. You could see on his face there was disappointment when the value of his items worked out at £1.50 each, but it's the truth, even at that value, no-one is going to pay that much.
