i always thought it the skull of a muton.

The skull shows signs of a head fin, so I'd say Kraken

Yeah, Kraken would be my best bet. Or a Zargonite!

I don't think its a Muton, they're Robots.

I wondered about a Kraken, but in the BAF Story "Codename Kraken" the Shadows already had a Skull & Crossbones logo on their helmets when they first discovered it.

Has it not got more of a skeletron resemblance?

Skeltron is also a Robot, so I'd say he was fashioned after the logo, or a Zargonite. Robert hit the nail on the head with fine nerd thinking (well done). So its gotta be a Zargonite. As sure as Red Laser is a ninja.
