Blood for the Baron!

Just got in a lot of figures and one was a Z Force Captain, I compared it to my other to see which was in better shape when I noticed they were painted differently.

Anyone ever notice this? The dark spots on the camo are different and one has smaller 'Z' logos on his shoulders. I checked the archive only to notice that both are pictured there (The packaged one is different from the loose one) but there's nothing that says there's a varient

The loose version:

(Notice the spots are big and there are only two on the crotch area)

The packaged version:

(The spots are smaller and there are 3 on the crotch area, also the hand seems slightly different, like it's closed more)

Also noticed something similar with The Black Major, one has a larger skull than the other, also the one with the larger skull seems to have smaller hands

Good Catch I never realized this before. so I dont know. but looks like you are on to something!

So does this mean that every figure has two versions? A Soft plastic and hard plastic version, or perhaps a good hand/bad hand version?

Not necessarily, but this might be possible. Action Force van drive you crazy, as every figure might have loads of versions:

Plastic variants (hard vs. soft)
Painting technique variants (hard edge vs. soft edge)
Paint colour variants (Sonar Officer with different packs)
Accessory variants (Z Force Captain comes MOC with two types of rifles)

I don't know how these variants all relate to each other. If a soft plastic variant comes in two colour variants, this might not have to be the case for the hard plastic variant.

Once the 3rd issue (Wolverine, Jackal et al) were upon us, Palitoy certainly introduced a certain degree of variety. I guess that's what the Assault Gear packs were for in terms of evening stuff out (and a tautology of variety).

As for Skip, I blame the change of UK AF DPM manufacture from bluddy Midlands to Asia c. mid 1984 so some UK MOD wallah got a kick back. The threads were never the same again! Although I hear Indonesia AF have a good set of the surplus spares, woolies aside.
