all right chaps
there are great points here, makes for a cracking read.
i reckon the toy industry is a very different beast today than it was 20 years ago, back then all kids wanted were toys and possiblly music, now from the age that they can say "I want that one", they want games consoles ( I know they were around back then but it was still pretty unusual for a five year old to have a commodore 64), mobile phones, mp3 players, dvd players and films ,TV, music and lastly toys (which now seem to be uncool for any kid over
what toys are around now seem mostly disposable itms based on that seasons must see film only to be found at the bootsales the year after. but whatever they are they all seem to be based on a licenced products, star wars, harry potter etc
my point is this, the quality of the far east stuff you mention could very well be the quality that Palitoy would produce in this day and age, firstly a good rule of thumb in terms of quality is of Action man.
look at the quality of the action man items made around early to mid eighties then look at the quality of the range a decade earlier, the difference is so much many vintage action man collectors ignore any of the 80's lines
if you look at the stuff released by hasbro in the early 90's to now then theres no real reason to think that palitoys vision would be any different (low production value, cheaper to produce, bigger accesories to meet sticter safety requirements and very marketing led rather than by toy designers to try and tap into current trends like skateboarding and extreme sports rather than creating something truley unique)
the backlash in militay toys in the early 80's were certainly on the minds of palitoy's toy designers judging the prototype drawings for the intended 85 relaunch of action man.
whats more Palitoy wer'nt great toy producers, nearly most of thier toy range (bar AF) were licenced from other toy comapines to which in most cases they just imported and rebranded for the UK.
so I would guess if they were still round today then factoring the more disposable nature of toys and the less overall spend by consumers, that they would be much lowe quality produced toys, certainly would not be the kind of quality of bbi, as these are models intended for the adult market with no safety restrictions and possibly a higher price point than childrens toys.
I think if palitoy had kept going the best we could of hoped for was contiual repaints of the jo line, which is no bad thing as the USS Flagg in Af colors would have been something.
whats cool though is that the spirit of af lives on in the modding of existing toy lines from other companies, alright the helicoptor you mention does not compare to a bbi Apachie but remeber palitoys AF5 looked like a mini metro with wings (but its still my fav)
