Speaking of Alistair Maclean, what about 'Bear Island' which is also based on one of his books I believe. Maybe not strictly a war movie per se, but it's all about Nazi gold buried in Alaska.

not really a war film but its about an RAF pilot who is meant to die but the angel sent to retrieve his soul cant find him, fog i think.
has to go to heaven to fight for his soul.
an absolutly beautiful flick and think its the first time an english film used colour.
