The one thing that lets me sleep at night is knowing that the APC had uprated armour. Chobham, obviously, as needed a bit of British tech-backbone.

The Soviets used to involve artists to design their kit - make it look more aggressive, esp. for the Navy. On the other hand, a lot of stuff was carefully thought out: the low-hulled BMP is designed for the nuclear battlefield, the low profile allows initial blast waves to scud over it, it's hard to pick out from HELOs and planes too. On the other hand, the rear doors are cheap and thin metal, thin-skinned on top too, all the thick-angled armour at the front was for nought when being hit by RPGs and mortars from above, the side and behind. These days Russians put logs on the back - when stationary, they are thrown off the back so the BMP can reverse up them: otherwise the cannon won't depress far enough for close range targets. Another design oversight ... finally remedied through hard lessons learned in Grozny 1994-1995.
