I was actually thinking that about controlled burns the other night as I watched it on the news. I didn't know that they'd not done any for years though. Strikes me as "maintenance" that needs to be done, but as you say, Greenies will be moaning that any smoke/fire is bad?
Reminds me of a farmer near where I grew up (Dad still lives there) who used to have a controlled fire a couple of times a year. Always had ever since I was a little lad, and as it was quite a rural village we just took it as part of the normal way of things. It's now a commuter village due to urban sprawl, with lots of new estates, one of which is near the farmer's land. What happens? They complain about his fires making their washing smell, and get him stopped.
Same when they built a load of houses that backed onto the cricket pitch, and they then tried to get them to stop playing cricket as it was "dangerous" and balls caused damage to their houses and were "dangerous to children"! For crying out loud - the houses were sold as having "lovely views over the cricket pitch"! What do they expect???
Sorry Chopper, I'm ranting now too, about far less important stuff, but the sentiment is "I'm hearing you mate"!
