Operation scrubbed.

Russians are spooked so AUS Ambassador in Moscow has gone public this morning saying there will be no armed personnel deployed and no military option, also minimal numbers, the stretched 150 to 190 AFP contingent and not the seven hundred armed personnel now authorised by Ukraine ...

Also more heavy armour sent over from Russia this morning via the breached Luhansk border crossing.

Let's see how this all develops.

Scary stuff Quickie (as he types checking the content of the Reserve Forces Act). Note from Mum may be required!
When confronted by a difficult problem you can solve it more easily by reducing it to the question. How would the Lone Ranger handle this?

Indeed, bad enough as it is but multiple ways for things to still spin out of control. Still 10K Russian regulars on Luhansk border inc. units shelling Ukraine from within Russia. Lot of vehicles marked up with 'MC' for 'peacekeeper' too as per Trans-Dniestr, South Ossetia (pre 08), Abkhazia but all the infantry, AA + engineering units, heavy armour and weapons are all in theatre ready to go.

:stake: still has a feeling there is one last surprise left before it all gets even worse ...

Also the Russian forces on the ground are way too cocky, after failed assault on Donetsk approach yday they are all lolling around taking pics with Ukraine KIA etc.

Today was Airborne Forces, or rather VDV, day in Russia; lest we forget, Ukraine too.

Russia also announced a mobilisation of all reserves - most of whom will be VDV, the only ones who turn up to the general muster - due to operational obligations from Ukraine to Nagorno-Karabakh (imminently) and thence to Daghestan and Afghanistan (deployed but not on full scale ops yet) as well as Siberia (independence/confederation protest marches and secession planned for August 17th via their future capital of Novosibirsk.)

Due to the happy coincidence, as of an hour ago all the authorities have to do is turn up to parks in major Russian cities and roll the inebriated carcasses into buses or ambulances. Mobilization complete.

Unfortunately the VDV/GRU fellows below won't be joining as they went back to Moscow from Ukraine in boxes nearly two months ago and are still being mourned by all manner of wailing babushkas who can't speak in public about their passing as they transited to an eternal cesspit whilst in the process of invading another country.

Russia has called emergency UNSC meeting for 2000 ZULU.

Looks like official invasion on for tonight or tomorrow, possibly with a new group of forces (albeit more limited than those in April-May) coming out of Belarus/Gomel as a diversion force headed for Kharkiv as the well-established 20K on the eastern border head in towards Luhansk to break the encirclement of Donetsk.

US SF now officially in Kyiv as part of small US EUCOM detachment to coordinate efforts around MH17 site...

27K Russian tourists currently stranded in Europe/Turkey/Crimea following the bankruptcy of Aeroflot's first budget airline.

Oh yeah and Germany just stopped training Russian forces, or as they put it, terminate a contract to build [finalise] the planned [established] training facility [expansion] in Rostov on Don. Russia will now sue the company.

Tin helmet time. Maybe.

My friend, if you are declaring the possibility of it being tin helmet time, then I for one will be buying a tin helmet.
So, is the sh*t actually about to hit the fan, or are we looking at a new cold war proper (as opposed to the last 20 years of lets pretend we're friends cold war)?

It's already a Cold War, MH17 tipped the balance so noone could ignore anymore.

But like a Cold War via World War I (British manufacturers selling barbed wire to Germany via Switzerland despite hostilities). But, in the Cold War USA kept USSR fed in the 70s with subsidised fish and wheat even as the Politburo fed the military-industrial complex on extraordinary post -1973 petrodollar income, so .... is it really that different?

Russia has called the meet so that the head of UN OCHA (focused on humanitarian affairs) is compelled to talk about the displacement problems in East Ukraine. This is also cover for the suppression of the Siberian independence movement who are kind of highly motivated (all goes back to a post-Crimea mayoral election in Novosibirsk that Putin's party lost and Putin's demands re: Ukraine's federalisation). But as Russian guerrillas have created the refugee problem (and some international aviation problems in the process) this is all but a black joke out of Gogol's (Politburo approved) playbook.

Noone knows who is in charge in Moscow anymore as the Army is not keen on an operation and their (+ SVR's) suppressed rivals the GRU are running the war despite facing extinction eighteen months ago.

Given the lock on by an Su-27 on a USAF RC-135 over the Baltic (forcing it into Swedish airspace) things are getting twitchy for the Yanks.

The six French Rafales on CAP in Poland (bilateral deal - Netherlands and then Italy vetoed early NATO deployments there, but UK now getting in on the act with "twenty tanks" for some spurious exercise rather than defensive purposes) have had a few tasty moments with RF forces based in Belarus (so many jets forward deployed that there are not enough hangars or dispersed hardened shelters for them - kept in the open as nothing to fear from westward approaches) since March. The four UK Typhoons in the Balts get to see the glories of Soviet aviation as well, more the lumbering types. But strike and air defence wings of the OpFor are focused further south so you might as well be using a Tornado or F16 to make a show of force in the Karakoram. Oh, wait...

After you've murdered nearly 300 foreigners for no reason in particular reason then escalating further is not particularly difficult. 1000+ Ukrainian civilians KIA and c. 400 in military is but a detail as the rest will be.

So, almost tin helmet time, but not quite, but time to think about it. We'll know more in the next twelve hours.

:quick:

PS. Another problem is that all the Ukrainian militia attached to National Guard wear old UK DPM and desert pattern army surplus. Even some UK issue helmets (the ones before those new ones that tip forward as you're aiming) and some desert camo and DPM webbing. So, if there is no UK army surplus in the UK anymore as its been sold to Ukraine, where does one buy a helmet or a gas mask these days in UK anyway? Not been checking recently ... nor on feebay neither.

PPS. And another problem is that all the Russian guerrillas from Russian prisons, ultranationalist covens, North Caucasus militias and Airborne units and commanded by Russian GRU officers wear a lot of old UK DPM as well as occasional desert pattern army surplus. Even some UK issue helmets (the ones before those new ones that tip forward as you're aiming) and DPM webbing and chest rigs. So, if there is no UK army surplus in the UK as its been sold to the Russian military, where does one buy a helmet or a gas mask?? Not been checking recently ... nor on feebay neither.

History records that one of the first guerrillas on the scene of MH17, before the guerrillas' SF unit Sokol turned up in fully kitted German webbing and rigs and encrypted radios on top of newer Russian camo, was wearing full c. post 1991-style UK desert kit ... complete with a Union Jack sewn onto the shoulder. Harry Potter capitalism at its finest.

Anyway, now to watch the UNSC. Guten Abend.

Having second thoughts about criticality ...

But at UNSC Russia just started presentation lying from the beginning saying that ICRC had recognised the armed conflict across 2% of Ukraine's land mass as an 'internal armed conflict' ... but it's been recognised as an international armed conflict by ICRC (privately) in the last week due to volume of men and materiel from Russia. Also stuff from Russian propaganda machine, pics of repeated use of 'phosphorus' cited which are clearly anti-IR missile flare blooms burning out in the sky. So Russians just gonna lie and live in their fantasy world until they are no longer in a position to do so. And they want international humanitarian action but are prepared to do it alone.

But they have to cover Afghan ops (already on ground), north Caucasus and possibly more in Iraq but they are outflanked there by Iran-US cooperation inc. Kurdistan which circumvents the current Iraqi executive. They can't do that with a war in Ukraine. Unless Slavic siloviki are collectively suicidal. Which they have been before.

French cited the tendency of Russians inc. journalists to pose with Ukraine KIA (second only to posing next to / humiliating Ukrainian wounded or squirters). Suggesting ISIS tendencies would perhaps be underscored by citing the mass graves in Slovyansk found after the Russian retreat.

On the other hand, the Ukrainians are going to keep killing the invaders until there are no more left to kill.

PS.

Brit President of the UNSC just said all violence is manageed from Moscow. Including naming all the Russian citizens managing the insurgency. Even pointing out that Russia has called a meeting to discuss a problem it has created!

UK TEMPORARILY REDISCOVERS ITS BACKBONE...

... from the comfort of an office overlooking the East River.

Ukraine continues on its own, situation normal.

:quick:

PS. Just before the delayed meet started there was an airstrike in Donetsk, unusual for the time of day as usually last UA air strikes are at dusk (even then they are limited due to complicated procedures used to provide fighter cover and confirmation of targets, add in limited resources to the mix and they are somewhat infrequently used unless absolute emergency), now almost certainly four hits in vicinity of the Donetsk HQ of GRU operatives Strelkov et al. A calculated middle finger to the Russians with Donetsk surrounded...

So maybe the next 48 hours do remain critical.
