While searching a Renegades image for the GI Joe wiki, I found this:

I think that being Japanese would suggest Samurai leanings especially as in Revenge of the Red Shadows stops him from comitting Harakiri whilst mentioning a slightly non politically correct term. I think his head band in this issue also proves this. So there's the proof definetley not a Ninja as they were Chinese.

Remember tat is a fictional character, and in fiction Ninja and Samurai have the same customs and honor codes, and both are portrayed as japanese. The differences are limited to Ninja=mask and Samurai=armor.

All depends on which writer is writing the fiction, DA. Battle comic was based upon real-life events and technologies long before the Action Force franchise was added to the roster.
