I suppose they were both modelled from the vintage Action man/Gi joe 12" figure hence the likeness...

pilots use kneeboards to keep their flight-plans and checklists on. pre-flight checklist, before engine-start checklist, engine start checklist, take-off checklist, in-flight checklist, refuelling checklist (if tehy refuel in-flight), pre-landing checklist, landing checklist and engine shut-down checklist. they skip all that in the movies. you don't even get in the plane without doing a pre-flight walk-around to make sure the plane's good to go.
