Every frame is a challenge. "Death of the Hawk" I'm doing on my lunch break, nearly done already. But its taken me nearly 2 weeks to get that Kraken page done. Xmas doesn't help tho ;-)

Nearly forgot, I've used photos of the action figures to get as close to the original characters as possible - especially for the Data files. Watson's stuff is out the window, at least there are already some pages done to give a decent palette.

The thing with Jims stuff is there's gaps ..he draws and Inks in a sketchy way .. what I do is look for all the gaps fill them in first and then either use paint bucket or paint brush .. but yeah
takes a bit longer than other artists work to colour .. but in a way makes his work more of a challenge but fun to do .. once you figure this out it gets a bit quicker .for reference i like to use photos .. right now I don't have to rely on figures to get things right as it's an origin story (although the shadows I'll get to colour are wearing great big Greycoats(mabe I'll do these Blood Red not sure yet) and the Baron a Fur Coat) so it adds another element to it .. but i'm miles away from that part of story lol)Christmas has taken a week away from working on story can't wait to resume on Monday

yeah, I know what you mean. I'm trying very hard not to colour everything in the Kraken. That would just look plain dumb, without re-doing everything. I also find I have to be in the mood to do it, otherwise the results aren't good. I'm still not wrapped in what I've done and will definitely go back and change some of the hues etc later. Once the hard work is done.

That Storm Shadow Battle file one was a real pig. An early attempt on my part and a real lesson. I've also done the Torpedo Battle file which I was much happier with.

One thing I've found very handy when colouring Jim Watsons art is the colour replacement tool (as far as all that crosshatching is concerned ) but the key to colouring his work is sealing all the gaps .. after that its simple (mind you there's lots of gaps ..looking forward to seeing Kraken :kraken: and the other stories and datafiles you've coloured :)

Thanks Fuzz. I just Googled the colour replacement tool. Been trying to figure out how you do that for ages. Like everything, once its identified - its easy. ;)

Just started using it - Its the answer to all my Jim Watson troubles. Fan-bloody-tastic... Thanks again.

Another thing I've found handy is reducing brushes capacity(to say 50% for example) when dealing with tricky cross hatching bits (that's if your using photoshop) mind you there are so many tricks that can be applied .. motion blurs, lighting effects, texture and lens flares been a few examples.

Blur, Lighting, brush strokes, posterise, hatching. Lots of useful tools. What I find cool is that so many tools can be used for things you won't ordinarily think of. Experimentation is very useful.
