The shockwave has knocked out much of the power supplies, it'll take a while for them to get back on their feet, I do hope he's ok.

I hope everything is Ok for DA.

I'm quite surprised by the lack attention this is getting considering its one of the largest in the last 100 years.

probably because, relatively speaking, it's not a big disaster. it was 22 miles down so the effects were some what mitigated, Chile's not as dirt poor and in such a mess as Haiti and there's fewer casualties in comparison to the Haiti quake.

there was one thursday or friday in Japan which never even made the BBC news, because it only injured 2 people and caused minimal damage.

Tsunami alerts in NZ have been withdrawn and just cautionary warnings issued. 8.8 is indescribably big, I have been in low 6+ quakes and they will break things and crack walls. For waters to rise a metre on the oher side of the pacific really puts it in perspective, last years quake in Samoa caused a half metre rise but they are NZ's neighbours.

Heres a note on the 1931 Napier quake that flattened the city;

# The earthquake had a magnitude of 7.8 on the Richter scale. There was no seismograph in Hawke's Bay, but the waves of the earthquake were measured at Wellington and other places around New Zealand.

8.8 is absolutely massive, I couldn't imagine how powerful that would have been. Even if it doesn't hit dead centre that kind of power will cause surrounding areas serious damage. We had a big one (around 7) hit near my Nana's house in the mid 80's and comms were cut in that area for 3 days. Dad had to get word from guys in the wildlife service using radio.

I sure hope he's OK. I'm hoping its just lines down and he's happily playing joes/action man to keep him self occupied.

Hope DA is ok, seem to remember he's close-ish to Patagonia in the deep south and out in the sticks, most casualties in urban areas north of there. Might just have lost comms? The electric grid is down in most areas.

It was just Concepcion that was affected wasn't it? My parents are crapping themselves they are supposed to be going there as part of a cruise package in 2 weeks.
