Now that made me laugh Sundance! After listing all of the pretty screwed up or deprived stuff going on I thought you were going down the "too graphic for comics" route, only to throw us a complete curve ball with "I like it!". Which is kind of what I was thinking too!

I've not read the Ultimates, but I suspect I too will like it! I agree with DA too though - sometimes Comic books are a bit too hard core for a child audience, but I would now guess that 90% of Marvels fans are people like us, and I guess that's why over here they have the kids comics, and then the "Collectors Editions" which even WH Smiths (for the non UK readers - big newsagents over here in the UK) store on the shelf with Nuts and the other Jazz Mags for them who cant reach the top shelf. Heck, about a year ago Spidey had a 'sexual abuse by his own brother' bad guy, and the Black Cat rape storyline. It doesn't get much more deep than that.

Taking a backwards step - even our beloved BAF if analised too deeply would probably be said to be unsuitable for kids these days. War is, after all, taboo now, so a megalomaniac Baron shooting his troops left right and centre would likely be considered a bit "non PC". The worlds gone soft, I tell you. It's okay to send kids off to war, but not to write about it.

Well, I don't find so grave the part of Wasp flashing (while not being front focused) or the fact of Tony Stark being alcoholic and womaniser (that comes not opnly from the "normal" Marvel, but even from the Lee era). The violence... it depends of WHO gets violent; if you tell me "Ultron slaughters a whole country" it's ok, but if you tell me "Cap kills a single man in cold blood" that's wrong (I find that more tolerable in AF and Transformers since that's war, but still with slight limits, like the good guys not killing in cold blood).
However, I find more tolerable violence to the indiscriminated "Everybody has sex". The mature characters with old-school values tend to have had sex with everything crossing their path, while the modern values teenagers are virgin, isn't that so backwards? Oh, and characters "become" gay just because the writer wanted a gay person (can't they create a new gay chara?).
And the Spider-Man things you are mentioning, SteveD... that's a theme nobody should show in TV or comic-books. Kill those sick writers.

i think that story was written by kevin smith.
its the last kevin smith story i'll ever read.

totally over the top and dealt with some pretty horrific things mentioned above and not even a "mature readers" warning.
i was disgusted and it takes a lot to turn me.

god example is punisher MAX, which is intended for adult readers. one of my favorite artists right now is Tim Bradstreet who has done a lot of cover work for the MAX series & also a some nice work for G.I. Joe Reborn:

The Joe stuff is awesome, the sideshow Cobra Commander is obviously based on his re-design:

i prefer comics to look more traditional, im not into some of the more modernised computerised looking artwork you see, having said that the painterly looking stuff in CABLE was awesome!

my only problem with any content in the Ultimate Comics I've read, in terms of 'it's disgusting it should never be allowed' content, was Blob cannabilising Wasp in Ultimatum. Yes, as in the fat f*ck was eating her insides when she was dead. This prompts Giant Man to retaliate by biting Blob's head off.

that sh*t is just f*cking sick and added nothing to the story. it was completely gratuitous.

and that was Jeph Loeb, not Mark Millar, that wrote that.

I like gratuitous. Although my preference is to artfully tackle taboos as opposed to shock value. But very little shocks me, to be honest.

Nobody believes this stuff is real, I seriously doubt anybody was actually influenced by the comic book to go out and cannibilase someone and, most importantly, cannibalism existed long before the comic.

However, I do like my gross mixed in with humour, which is why I love Garth Ennis.

Now that disturbs me more than any comic book.
