Good question. I like everybody's different versions of events regarding World's Enemy No 1.
My take is that

is either the daughter of

or the much younger wife of

, and that

was a member of

but had ambitions of his own and so plotted with

to make sure

was indisposed (but not dead) somehow. Then during the events of World's Enemy No 1,

poses as

in order to bring about the downfall of

, and then reveals himself to be

to

. Then when

wakes up after his op

gives him the name

however some time later the real James McCullen decides to infiltrate

and tops

and then becomes

himself.
that way

is still the only person who knows who

and

really are. Coz

reveals his true James McCullen indentity to

as per the Larry Hama GI Joe comics.
That means

is still out there, and plotting revenge against his daughter/ex-wife

and his former
Just as an aside while

has a great origin as per the great text story in BAF Annual 1985 (i think), the origin of

in the GI Joe comics isn't so great. I mean a car salesman, nothing against car salesman but come on.

I like Marvels origin of Cobra Commander, he was the small time used car salesman who try as he might could never catch break, thus grinding him under societies wheels to the breaking point ! Transforming him into the ruthless megalomaniac that he is .... much like some other insignificant painter/world war 1 veteran...

Hey Battle Action Force (well it may have just been Battle at that time) comic even did the origin story for the said WW1 vet you refer to, a certain Corporal Hitler I believe appeared for a while in Charley's War. And old Adolf was a frustrated artist and he got gassed in the Great War, it's still a better origin than being a car salesman, worse still a "used" car salesman.

origin from GI Joe the Movie was better and yes I know we're talking Cobra Laa.

origin on the other hand is better than any Bond villian, you can read it here

I'd prefer to keep the two separate. The whole Ironblood became Cobra Commander to throw the world off his trail could just be some disinformation he had planted to cause the commander more trouble from his own enemies looking to get even with him. So he could either be in retirement ,or planning something big uninterfered.

Another idea on the whereabouts of the Baron came to me yesterday when I was out on the field. Maybe when Vaughn infiltrated and took control of the Red Shadows for his own purposes. He had the Baron locked up somewhere, due to the fact there were still valuble things locked in his twisted mind waiting to be plucked. And that Vaughn and his inner circle still need the man alive.
