Curiously, these figures were intended by Hasbro to be part of the GI Joe universe. Later incarnations of Street Fighter characters which were marketed as merchandise for the 1994 live action movie starring Jean-Claude Van Damme did not contain any references to GI Joe on the packaging and are not considered part of the official line, despite their obvious similarities.
