Nail varnish remover will always eat the plastic, even in dilluted form. Where do you think the 'shine' comes from? The shine is the result of plastic being eaten away. This method is not really beneficial for cleaning up you toys!
Household bleach does the trick, but it does take months to have an effect. Secondly, it only works on white plastic. It eats away the colour inside coloured plastics. We do not want that to happen.
Hydrogen peroxide is the best solution. It works fast and is reliable. There are multiple links found with very impressive results.
