In 2005 Devil's Due Publishing decided to take their GI Joe comic in a bold direction. They introduced a new faction to the Joeverse who targeted both the GI Joe and Cobra organisations at once. The name of this faction was one that we at BFTB were all too familiar with - the Red Shadows. The move sparked controversy and debate among the GI Joe fandom, but was met with a lukewarm response among the Action Force fans as, apart from the name and logo, the characters bore no relation to the Red Shadows of old.

The Rise of the Red Shadows storyline developed slowly, with the prologue piece being a collection of carefully seeded teaser pages. The full collection was released as a trade paperback and is the only place where you will see the epilogue story. There then followed a series of brief appearances in the subsequent World War III storyline.

It was during this storyline that the Blood For The Baron community petitioned DDP to retcon these new Red Shadows as the classic Palitoy characters. To the joy of our forum members, Wilder Vaughn was clearly seen wearing the uniform of the Black Major, as was originally postulated here. Not only that, but Action Force members Hunter, Quarrel, Moondancer and Blades also made a cameo - their first printed appearance in over twenty years.
